This may be a stupid question , but I am having a chat on the pistonhead forum and someone has come back and said that the Supersport 911 does not use the turbo body, in other words the turbo and all its fittings are different , I thought the Supersport was a turbo minus the turbo everything was else was the same .

Mike
You are correct is turbo body with suspension and brakes, steering rack same but not the track rod ends these are standard Carrera (useful upgrade to fit turbo tie rods??)
Turbo engine was 3 lt raising to 3.3 lt in later cars. Original turbos only had 4 speed box but did get the 5 speed (same G50 I believe as in yours) just before being replaced by the 964
Just scan the Porsche PET database and see common part numbers
Stick to dedicated Porsche forums for the data??

Cant agree more about some sites posters and mis-imformation. 911UK is another classic site where some really bad info is posted.

Sorry Geoff, steering rack isnt the same as a turbo!

Hi this is what the guy is saying

Hey Mike. There is a reason Porsche called them Turbo Look. They are not a turbo shell. Ask a body shop that is used to jigging these cars. With the turbo there is a 1/2" spacer that sits where the steering rack mounting points are. The whole shape around that area is completely different. I had to modify my Supersport shell so I know for sure. When you drop the front end on the Supersport to race heights it runs on its bump stops. And voila it handles like a pig. So I had to bite an expensive bullet and modify my car. Remember the basalt black and Carrera gt silver road legal race going SSE. That was mine. They say you learn something new everyday

I seem to remember this chaps Supersport ,BUT was it a real M491 OR JUST A WIDE BODIED CAR , I shall have to ask him

Mike

If you order a complete new body shell from Porsche the Turbo and M491 have the same part number.
The steering rack fixing bolts are 10mm (1/2") shorter on the Turbo so the "spacer" or whatever he refers to is more likely for Carrera. I suspect he did not have a genuine M491 but a wide arched modified Carrera of which there are many. The obvious give away with those is that they needed wheel spacers at the rear to avoid having to change the suspension swing (banana) arms etc.
Anyway my advise is to stop arguing with him and get on with your life!

Mike
im sure you have turbo track rod ends too, i seem to remember them being changed soon after I got the car.

Mike, refer him to Tony Corletts book The last of the Evolution. There's a whole section on the
M491 Turbo look/Supersport Equipment:Wide Body, which details the whys and what's and wherefores of the model. As Geoff said, there were/are loads of modified wide bodies out there, one reason why Porsche introduced the option in the first place.
