Are turbo's still going for strong money? **NOW SOLD**

I was trawling autotrader about 10 days ago and I came across a rather nice looking '90 turbo in black with a reduced price of £5k. Unfortunately, it was miles and miles away from me otherwise it would have been worth a look.

It's gone from autotrader now.

Closer to home, I spot in the last day or so what looks like the same car being advertised for £8995 via a dealer. I'm almost certain it's the same car.

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2239855.htm

I thought the prices were pretty much falling (especially for s2, lux's etc..) and wouldn't dream of a £4k mark up being feasible at this moment. I wonder if it'll sell quickly and, if it does, for how much. [8|]

Looks very much like a dealer trying it on. Anyone who bleats on about "appreciating classic" and "built for the true and knowledgable enthusiast" would very much get the swerve from me. I don't begrudge anyone trying to make an honest crust, but car dealers don't make their from me. Particularly with mark-ups like this (presuming your story is true.) Ask me about how I bought my last car. It involved a dealer and a huge mark-up not being made ... Oli.

Yes he would be dreaming with that mark up [:D] I do think good and I stress the word good turbos are are still holding their own. I wouldn't part with mine for any less than 5K perhaps more. But then again I wouldn't part with her. Turbos have obvious appeal and whilst I wouldn't say are rare they must be fewer in numbers than other models. Mods maybe a poll to find out the numbers of what models people on the forum have. What do you think?

Just goes to show that a car might be worth buying when it's for sale at £5K. [&:] Reading the ad, if the car's as good as described could you buy an equivalent car, and add all the extras, for that money? Plenty of owners here have spent close on £10K to get a really good turbo, some far more. I'd want to read through the history, and see the bodywork for myself, but I'd not discount spending that on a car that ticks so many boxes.

Is this seller not a reincarnation of another (in)famous central scotland seller of Porsche etc I genuinely can't remember their original name which gets me around the name and shame rule but their ebay feedback made interesting reading. That looks a nice car but if I'm right (and I may not be) then a very thorough PPI would be recommended.

You are correct. I actually have no "adverse knowledge" of or with the dealer but I do know they have also sold many Porsches (esp 944's) under a different trading name on eBay.

I pretty much agree with that Paul. I'm probably around the £8k mark now to get my turbo the way I want it with similar mods/condition to this one. I wouldn't part with mine for less than £8k as I couldn't replace it for less than that now that the bodywork is sorted, all major jobs have been attended to (clutch, waterpump, belts, seals, suspension) and upgrades done to my liking. There is a market for £8k to £10k turbos but only to a genuine enthusiast who knows what he's looking for. As Oli says his patter will cause alarm amongst genuine 944 folk and DavidL hints there may be some hidden history so this one would be a no for me. Stuart

The wheels are worth best part of a grand alone,no sunroof, car was worth more he was in a rush there[:(]

If it is as good as advertised then it is probably worth the money, certainly looks like a decent example, no close up shots of the sills or inside the door vents though which given the pretense of Porsche knowledge you would have thought it would have. Also the badge panel or rather the paint around the badge looks like a bad re-spray. However if I was after a Turbo I would be tempted to go and take a look.

David, It was Buchanan Car sales or something like that, they are near me in Stirling. It looks the same guy.

Sandy, that's the name. No personal knowledge at all and it may be a great car and make someone very happy but caveat emptor as always.

ORIGINAL: Hilux Unless its unique and/or factory original and low miles then £6k max
IIRC there have been some well modified examples that have gone for rather more in the not too distant past. If it was factory original then yes £6k max as they really do need a bit of tweaking to make them more driveable and that should be factored into the purchase price. Low miles might be a cause of concern rather than a bonus too.

It is indeed one and the same, i went to look at a car he had for sale, i found him honest in the car's appraisal over the phone with a few small porky's chucked in, would only offer 6k trade in on my Turbo S which has all the right bits and some ! And is in fantastic very straight condition bar a few stonechips which will be sorted over winter (windsreen forward getting painted. I bet my house he would have punted mine at £9995 it wanted for nothing bar a small leak from the PS reservoir, half an hour and no parts neede to sort, so nothing to spend on it. Maassssssive history and loads of provenance. A good straight honest example is worth that money IMO all day long....................................if you can find one ! [&:]

If it is the same car then that is quite a mark up but we don't know if there was originally something expensive wrong which has now been rectified and has improved it to a fantastic example. Also this is definitely NOT the right time of year to sell a car like ours and the original owner may just have kept lowering and lowering the price in desperation to find a seller. The Trader may have quite a healthy balance sheet so is quite happy to wait until spring when he'll hope to get the proper price. Of course all of this is speculation and the car may indeed be rubbish [:D] Also lets not forget that supercharged 968 at Specialist Cars currently at £30k which was for sale privately 6 months ago at only £20k. A private sale of such a specialist vehicle can sometimes appear worrisome to a prospective purchaser but the same car from a recognised Dealer will often give the buyer a renewed confidence - yet it's the same car [&:]

This was the car I went ot see this morning that had the misfire, obviously the owner could not get it repaired! Turned out to be the pressure line to the KLR ecu was kinked behind the ecu panels someone had T'd off the AFR gauge and crimped the pipe to the ecu. Very, very tidy car with all the right bits, Scivision MAF, 3bar FPR, Hayward and Scott full exhaust, fresh M030, 3 grand receipt for rebuilding of the back axle, DPW, chipped, recentish belts and water pump, 968 M030 anti roll bars front and back, AFR guage and boost gauge mounted in the centre console, the list was quite extensive. Split rear seats with a lovely blind! We all missed out on a cheap cheap car lads! Alasdair

Well, I think I have the answer to my question. Pistonheads now updated to say "Sold via Pistonheads - to Joe". That didn't take long. Crikey.

I think there was a swell of opinion amongst turbo owners that the price was value for money if the car was right. I certainly know what's involved in sourcing a late turbo and getting it properly sorted. I am not surprised it has sold TBH as Alasdair seemed to confirm that it was indeed a good'un. Feel better about the money I have been spending on my one now! [:)] I think you may see some good ones go for 5 figures in the next few years............... Stuart

....and it might be that mine will be joining that list very soon. Out of the blue I have had three very interested parties contact me in the past week, so after 8 years LIL might be leaving the fold. [:(] As some of you know, I had planned to advertise and sell her in the spring which is the best time to sell our cars but when people contact you after hearing a rumour of a sale what can you do?
