Are you purists? with RS mods

Me again!

I would regard myself as a bit of a purist when it comes to original cars, and having the O.E look. I think cars like Porsche and Audi cars look best in natural form.

Well sort of........enhanced by a nice set of fully adjustable suspension and a nice set of expensive set of wheels (light modifications that can be taken off). All in a good way of course for handling and for looks.

But my quest would be to find a 964 prefably C2 or C4 and to have her RS specd, ie suspension, wheels, and odd bits. Show or tell me what you have done to yours, and what you think about light modding your 964.

Sorry to mention you all the time Brksy16(im sure you love it[;)]), mainly because I havent seen many of the other member's cars, but I do like the way you have light modified your car.

Looking through the classifieds you'll find that most 964s have had something modified whether it be through necessity (like replacing tired suspension with bilstein shocks) or tuning the sound of the exhaust. The great thing about the meets I've been to has been the opportunity for me to see cars that are close to how they came from the factory, wide body conversions and 'RS alikes'. All are appealing in my eyes. I've yet to see one that I would describe as ruined by modifications which goes to show that 964 owners appreciate Porsche's original design. And it's not only the owners that appreciate the model - this is the first car I've owned where people stop and stare and kids point at you, mouths wide open, as you drive by.[:D]

Since you asked, my personal aim is to lightly modify so that it's better than a standard car on trackdays but still up to long distance touring. Resources like this forum, Rennlist.com and 911UK.com have been a great way of finding out what others have done, what is possible and how to do things. My list of mods so far is:

  1. Weight reduction - removal of rear seat backs, replacement of footwell sound proofing with lightweight materials.
  2. Upgrade of rear brakes from 2 pots to later 4 pots, braided hoses, higher boiling point brake fluid and Pagid pads for use on trackdays.
  3. Replacement of the primary silencer with a cup pipe - better noise and another good weight reduction in the best place (middle, rear).
  4. Polyeurethane anti roll bar bushes.
  5. Recaro pole position racing shells in ambelia leather/suede. Accompanied by 4 point harnesses and harness guide bar.
  6. Front carbon fibre strut brace.
  7. Clear indicator lenses, addition of an OBC tacho and tear drop mirrors.
  8. A set of lighter wheels for trackdays (these are red which adds a bit of fun to what is meant to be a fun day out).
  9. Driver training so that I can realise some of the potential that a 964 has to offer on track.
The car was already on lowering springs and new factory dampers but my aim is to replace these with something adjustable next year.

Each time I replaced something I kept the original bits i.e. I still have the original seats, flag mirrors, indicator lenses, exhaust, etc because I view them as belonging to the car and should be available to go with it if necessary.

Someone else's turn now [;)]

Thats great Steve, I think the mods that you have mentioned is what I would probably do but no more to the extent of putting bodykits or even enhanced front spoilers and bigger spoilers unless necessary (no offence to guys if they have) But each to their opinion. As you say most of the guys appreciate the shape and design of the car.

Anyone put a rear rollcage on their non RS 964? and even go to the extent of changing RS rear glass to the 36mm. Or even changing rear bumpers to the RS bumpers, carbon bonnets, etc.

The 6 mods that make the biggest differerence, in no particular order, are 1) lightweight flywheel, 2) lighter wheels, 3) Big Red brakes, 4) suspension set-up, 5) removing weight where you can and 6) adding more bhp - motec or air-mass. Items 1) and 2) are often overlooked but the rotational energy saved is equivalent to many KG's of weight. Good seats, harness etc are also very good for 'connecting' with the car.

Mods, a few done a few to go.

GT3 wheels
Strut brace
H&R springs
Bilstein HD dampers
RS ARB
RS front drop links
RS door cards
Rear seat delete
RS carpet set
Rear wiper delete
Third brake light
Dansk Dual exhaust with G pipe, no secondary silencer
Promax MAF and performance chip
Clear indicators and a bit more.
Colour coded door handles and rear spoiler infill

Things to do:-
Fit the 60/40 LSD sitting in the garage.
Fit the powerflex bushes to the wishbones sitting in the garage

Things to buy

LWF and RS clutch

Thanks,

I've owned it now for a bit over 6 years, love the shape, feel and noise, and excepting a GT3, wouldn't sell her....it's almost where I want it to be now.....almost.

Cool 6 years, how often is this used?

The wheels work on the car, are they off a Boxster running the same tyre size?

what else are you planning for the car?

Here's how I would like my car. Probably different to most but I like my cars to look as standard as possible only lighter. Not using the car for track days but wanting it more responsive on the road means softer settings than many would go for (I like the way the standard car drives when doing lots of miles).

The following would be on my list

Lightweight flywheel and clutch.
Lightweight bonnet and engine lid (fiberglass or carbon) with standard latches.
Remove heavy standard seats. Replace with light racing seats.
Original 17" Cup 1s.
Original amber lights.
Lower car at front slightly. Standard wishbones, dampers, etc. Rubber bushes all round.
Lightweight door cards.
Remove heavy sound proofing from interior (a total PITA to do).
RS rear bumper.
Standard exhaust.
Stiffer rear ARB, standard front.
Pilot sport cup tires for summer driving, Bridgestone road tires for winter.
Teardrop wing mirrors

Here's a pic of the car currrently which is the look I like and doing the above would end up with the car looking just the same other than it would have a more nose down stance.
