Armrest obsession

Hi, last night I spent a fair few hours looking at photos of armrests online (I know, I know..) for 1984/85 square dash 944's. Not every model I looked at had one, mine doesn't but should it? Can anyone tell me if they always came as standard or was it an extra? Having ploughed much time in to looking at them I'm now planning on getting one but can anyone tell me how to fit it please? as I'd quite like to get some sleep tonight!
