audi quattro or 911

Hi there,

Well that is an interesting question which I will more than delighted to reply tomorrow (a bit late now).

At present I have:

1/ Ur-Quattro 1985 Zermatt Silver (10v of course) bought in November 1989 with 17200 miles on the clock and now has 93000 miles, totally original in and out.

2/ 911 3.2 December 88 Slate Grey bought in October 2002 now has 94500 miles also mint and totally original (no spoilers but LHD). This car replaced a Carrera 4 I bought new in 1990 which was sold in September 2001.

I suppose I can make a few comments on the ownership of both cars but there no simple answer, one has to determine one's needs first.

Are you hesitating between the 2 cars?

Regards
Salvador

It's easier ( and cheaper ) to keep a 3.2 Carrera properly maintained and on the road than a 20V quattro ....... mind you, you could probably argue that it's easier to keep a 20V quattro on the road than a 911!

At the moment I have a 20v quattro but have been thinking about selling it and getting a 911.I really like the audi but am a bit torn between the two.

The ideal situation is to have both in the garage, both great cars particularly the 20V.

In early 1984 I wanted to change my car and buy a new one. Two contenders at the end were the Quattro and the 911 coupe. Tried both, looked at the pros and cons and orderer a new Tornado Red Quattro which duly came in May 84, one of the first with the wide wheels. At the time the 911 disappointed me with the driving position, gearbox and clutch.

Loved the 1st Quattro to bits, could fit the children and go to the Alps, no bother going up in the snow. Anyway 2 years later I bought a red 911 SC for the week end. Decide to part with the Quattro sometime later and it was the biggest mistake I ever made. I was really miserable not having a Quattro, I searched for a long time to find a good 2nd hand one. Eventually I found one by luck in Seal near Sevenoaks, I had to have it that was November 1989. I still have the car, no intention to sell it and as far as the running costs are concerned the car is not more expensive than a 911 on the contrary. I remember that my 2 nd 911, the Carrera 4, did cost an arm a leg to mantain. My actual 911 3.2 has been good.

I run both cars on Dunlop SP9000 and it has improved the performance dramatically, specially the 911.

Quattro; relaxing to drive, plenty of room, great noise, comfy, great on a long drive, totaly effortless, always delivers a smile and performance, totally underrated, looks the business

911: more demanding to drive, great on smooth B roads, tiresome if the surface is bumpy, not the ideal car for a long drive, great shape and sound, good performance (I think that my LHD drives nicer than the RHD 911's I had)

I understand you are torn between the 2, hence me saying have both. Mind, when I sold the SC I did not miss it, the Carrera 4 not too much, but I always wanted a 3.2, the last real 911. In fact only a few weeks ago I was thinking in selling the 3.2 and my son said I should keep it. I haven't decided what I am going to do, so there we are, you think that you have got a problem.

In conclusion: Quattro's are just great, should have bought a 20V before they stopped the production (Pearl White). Are you a member of the Quattro Owners Club?

Good luck
Salvador
