I'm looking to swap the standard headunit and speakers on my 2000 996 for some better kit. After a visit to my local car stereo place, they've suggested a few things. However it seems I'm going to have a problem getting anything good in terms of a headunit which has an amber display. Most of the good headunits (with bluetooth and ipod connections) now light up blue.

I can live with this as I'd rather have it sounding good. I know I could get a Becker which looks more original but to be honest have heard too many comments that the sound quality is not up to Pioneer/Alpine etc.

However also advised that the speaker sizes are 10cm, quite small now apparently. I can get component speakers, apparently much better sound than standard co-ax ones, but at £200 more per pair.

I've been quoted for the following kit:
Pioneer DEH-P7900UB headunit - £330
Pioneer BTB200 Bluetooth kit - £200
Focal 100KP 10cm component speakers for the dash - £280
Focal Vi 10 cm speakers for the rear - £85
(leaving the door bass units in place for now)
Genesis P2 Amp - £200

This comes to well over £1000! What ever happened to just popping in the headunit and a couple of speakers[&:] I know the Infinity Kappa 42.7 co-ax speakers fit and cost £200 less and can also shave a bit more off, buying all this on the internet if I have to But do I dramatically sacrifice sound quality using co-ax instead of components?

Are there any audiophiles out there who have done anything similar for less, or better? Did they see me coming and just quote the most expensive kit?

Has anyone got a different set up they are happy with? Answers on a postcard please!
