Audio...

Hi,

I know this question may be a little like sacrilege to some of you but please bear with me :)

I recently acquired (just last week infact) a 944 Lux. On the whole the car seems pretty good but the audio system really leaves a lot to be desired. The previous owner had already upgraded the head unit to an Alpine unit with an iPod connector and put in some better speakers but it still really lacks any depth (though the clarity is not bad).

My previous cars have had a sub installed in them, nothing too loud or boomy or boy racer, just something to give the music a little depth.

Now the 944 seems to a little difficult in this regard... there doesn't actually seem to be much space to put a sub in anywhere without leaving it exposed in the boot. The only space that possibly could work is in the boot on the driver side there is a storage compartment under the carpet... it could possibly fit in there. Has anyone attempted this? I dont want anything to be visible really or look obviously non OEM.

I would quite like to put in some decent speakers too (6.5" components maybe?) and perhaps install them i the boot without them taking up too much space? Not sure if this would work though or what it might end up looking like....

Lastly has anyone managed to use the Double Din space to do something useful like put in a modern screen with touchscreen sat nav or something perchance?

Thanks for your help.

I am looking for some good 6x4 speakers that will fit the front enclosures without the need for any cutting and shutting, so will be interested to see what recommendations come your way!

Speakers have been done on here recently. Do a search.

I have a small amp in the rear storage bin. It makes a LOAD more difference than a sub.

Oli.

I made custom speaker pods for the door in my 944 the same as these which i have made for my 911. Looked great in the car without being out of place IMO.
As for the speaker system i removed the spare wheel and replaced with a compressor and tyre weld. Then in the spare well hole i used that as an insulator for 2 10" air free subs just sound dedening and make a false floor across the boot. If you cover it in acustic clos=th you can go straight over so it looks like the subs arent even there. With this set up 5.5" component speakers up front, no need for rear it sounded very loud and crystal clear.

There's a small American firm that makes sub boxes by hand specifically to fit the storage cubby, just as you described. I bought one myself, and it's perfect.

I have that single sub under the boot carpet, an Alpine amplifier mounted vertically inside the spare wheel, standard rear speakers, JBL 6x4" component speakers in the front, and a good solid Becker Grand Prix head unit with iPod connection. An old 30Gb iPod with a dead battery is permanently hooked up inside the armrest/cassette holder, wired through a small drilled hole. Totally invisible, and the Becker head unit looks period even though it's high-tech. All-in-all, a pretty stealthy audio setup which sounds fantastic on the go.

thanks for the replies.

The Klain Industries enclosure definitely looks interesting. I was thinking of running an 8" Kicker L7 sub.. however these are square so I have dropped them an email to see if they can produce one that will take the L7 sub rather than a normal circular sub. I guess I could stick to a regular circular 8" driver if its not possible. Its not cheap though is it.....

poprock, i take it you're pretty happy with the enclosure?

I'm not too keen on modding the door cards to be honest to fit new speakers but I do intend to amp the speakers also....

I'm very happy with it. It is my first foray into car audio systems though, so please bear in mind that I've little else to compare it to!

The box is very well built, I can vouch for that. Nicely finished and so on. They even painted the top black for me to help it look original when you lift the carpet. If ordering though, make sure you remember that tey're American so what they call "˜driver's side' is actually our passenger side, and vice-versa.

Well the Klain box can't accomodate the L7 sub which is a shame... might have to investigate things a little further....

bennyboy that looks like quite a serious install... it takes up quite a lot of the boot I think though I'm sure it sounds pretty impressive. What sort of money were you after for it? Its likely to be more expensive than my budget to be honest. Also I wouldn't really be interested in the head unit or the CD changer as I have head unit with iPod connection already.

Infinity reference speakers. 6x4 units direct fit with round drivers. Very good.
Grills fit ok.

Darren.

Pioneer active sub in the spare wheel. Fills out the missing bass you dont get from the rear speakers.
Just enough.
Cheap enough 2nd hand off flea bay.

A5DSR, those speakers look great and still keep the standard looking grills.

Might have to invest in some before the Le Mans trip, to help smooth away those miles[:D]

Which model are they?

Thanks

Give me an offer! I had planned to sell the stereo stuff separately on ebay, but you can have all the speakers and the amps, with the carpeted boot-build as a job lot, and I'll sell the multi-changer separately.

Hi Darren, where did you get these from? I've done a few searches but can't find any for sale??

Hi,
They are Infinity Reference 6402CFP.
There are a few newer models now.
Just tried a quick search and they show up on ebay.com but none in the UK.

The speaker fits in the door fine with the rubber water protector removed. The grills fit over with a little help from silicon sealant as I broke a couple of clips removing them. be careful.
Cheers
Daz.
