Auto Door Lock Setting Lost

My car has come back from service having lost its setting to auto-lock the doors as you set off and I understand that it requires a trip to dealer for them to fix. Any ideas why the setting might have got lost and why Porsche didn't see fit to make it a user setting?

They must have reloaded the engine map / computer. I tried to get it added and the (independent) servicing agent said it took ages cos they had to unload the engine computer and then reload it again with the door setting switched on. A lot of hassle (and expense) for something so simple.

That's absolute tosh they are telling you! It takes less than 5 minutes, and has nothing to do with engine mapping. Your independent doesn't know what he is talking about.

(Edit: Programming instructions added below)

Programming Automatic Door Locks

Vehicle Type: 911 Carrera (996)
Model Year: As of 1999 (X)
Concern: Operation of automatic door locks
Information: The automatic door locking feature may be programmed to one of four different modes of operation.

Version 1: Doors lock automatically when the ignition is switched on.
Version 2: Doors lock automatically when a speed of 3 - 6 mph is exceeded.
Version 3: Doors lock automatically when the ignition is switched on. If the doors are opened with the engine running, they will lock automatically when a speed of 3 - 6 mph is exceeded.
Version 4: Doors do not lock automatically.
All vehicles leave the factory programmed to version 4.

The Porsche System Tester (PST2) is required to change the automatic door locking version.

Procedure:
1. Connect the Porsche System Tester (PST2).
2. Select vehicle type and start an automatic control module search.
3. Select Alarm system.
4. Select Coding in the "Function selection" menu.
5. Select Version Coding in the "Coding" menu.
6. Select the appropriate version and store the setting with the "F8" key (Coding).
7. Return to the Start menu with the "Esc" key and switch off the system tester.
8. Test the system for correct operation of the selected version.

Thanks Richard, in the finish I took it to the dealer but still 3 hours out of my Saturday morning I could have done without. Pity the PST2's are not available on ebay!
