Auto umbau / the whole hog!

Hi all, not been on for a while.

A few weeks after I went out to buy new number plates for the old girl, I looked in the garage to find the old girl listing badly at the rear to the passenger side - arhhhh.....broken torsion bar!

I purchased the original number plate for the car off the seller after I declined his excessive price on purchase. 2 years later and A911 AHL is mine for good and the price more reasonable. Out of interest does the registration jog any memories?

So back to the car, I have just had her taken to BS motorsport who are based between Aylesbury and Bicester. They are clearly Porsche crazy and have some amazing pieces of metal in storage and in the workshop. Well worth a trip and maybe an R21 outing?

New torsion bars (Neil Bainbridge suggested I update to turbo size bars) are in but the bush arms need replacing...ouch. Work to exhaust and engine out to sort oil leaks and refurb the gearbox later this week, more ouch.

Neil has suggested the bodywork is done by Auto Umbau in Silsoe in Beds. Has anyone had experience of them? I am going the whole hog and getting the glass out for a full respray and body work dealt including large rusty hole behind the driver side sill cover discovered last week!

I will take some photos and publish if people are interested. Any comments appreciated.

Thanks

James

A bit further afield is Tom Martin at Lemass. (although I am not sure where you are)
Its a small but excellent outfit in Chalfont st Pete.
I've had quite a lot of work done by him and would recommend him highly - he's also well known in the Porsche world.

Regards,

Richard

Thanks for all the responses. Neil says Robin dalwood only does paint and I need some metalwork sorted. Spoken to other Robin at auto and seems a good guy. Fingers crossed for not too many surprises but inevitable I suspect.

I saw the Rsr video, awesome. There were 2 in the workshop a few weeks back!

Anyone else upgraded rear torsion bars? Much difference?

Neil also suggested removing pre-muffler as cheaper and sounded better? Any thoughts on this?

Thats definately not true Robin does complete resto and i dont know why neil would say that you must make your own decisions as to where to go mine are based as to where i live (Bucks) and over a long period of time i have built up a list of people who do a very good job at a reasonable price i also know some of the ones who dont your choice

AutoUmbau - the guy is an artist. I have never seen cutting and welding like it. Repaired areas are finished by electroplating with zinc. Aircraft quality sealants and waxing to finish off

Image shows zinc-plating and invisible repair to my previously well-rotted car.

Thanks Robin for vote of confidence. I have spoken to Robin at Auto Umbau and happy with his approach. Neil is convinced he is the right person to use. Will post some pics in due course.
