I had the car towed to my garage due to an alarm immobilizer fault the previous owner couldnt figure. It wouldnt start. I worked out the alarm problem turned the key and she started (Beautiful) moved her forward and backward not too far incase she stopped working, all good! The next time i visited i checked oil put in petrol etc and started her again, perfect! Moved the gears forward backwards a couple of times then tried to move forward and nothing. She only goes in reverse!!! Can anyone help?

The automatic box is connected to the lever by cables. The lever surround can be removed to check that the cables are in place at that end. At the back it should be possible to see the cables from underneath and check that they are connected properly. It sounds as though the car is stuck in reverse. There is an arm on the side of the gearbox which is moved to select the gears - check that this arm is clamped in place correctly.

There is a lot of set up and diagnostic information on the automatic gearbox in the workshop manual - you can get a CD copy cheaply from e-Bay.

Seem to remember that when towing an automatic the driven wheels should be lifted off the ground.

+1 on transmission fluid level. easy to see as filler container is transparent. Level will drop when car started.

I think reverse will still work when there isn't enough fluid to get forward going.

Cheers,

Thanks I will put all these theories to the test and let you know how i get on. Just hope i havent got a broken transmission!!!
You are correct about towing an automatic too i didnt know this but the guy i bought it off did.
I did already know about the Transmission fluid and am planning to check this first then begin the process of fault finding from there. I havent had the car since October 2013 and it has simply sat in the garage waiting for the warmer weather :) I am planning to bring her back to her former glory with no previous experience so i will probably be popping up with lots of questions. So far this Forum has been a god send!
The colour by the way is listed as Almond Beige Metallic (Commonly known as gold) I love it too :)
