Automotive Metallurgist

Is anybody or does anybody know an Automotive Metallurgist that could assist with my situation as described in my "Mis-fire Problem" topic?

Why not try your local University Physics Department, they should have an academic qualified to give an opinion or even use your engine as a project for the students.
Worth thinking about.

Hi Peter,

I had thought of that. The problem with donating an engine (I offered it to the University where my son's studying and they were extremely keen) is that they'd want it FOC and the new engine would cost me an extra £2,000 if I didn't return the original to Porsche. Guess I'd need to feel a lot more philanthropic to go down that route.

I also found by coincidence the College that provides all the Porsche apprenticeship training and the lecturer there was happy to accept the engine in its dismantled state. That would have saved DGR and myself time and costs in having to reassemble it. Unfortunately nobody at Porsche GB would sanction this option as it was outside of their engine exchange rules.

Looking at the daily rates for IMechE Engineers I think I'd be wasting money in pursusing the matter down that line and there'd still be no guarantee of success.

I guess I'll look upon the situation as being fortunate to discover the faults, as if the mis-fire had been solved under extended warranty without the engine being dismantled, it could have led to a more catastrophic failure with even higher costs.

Many thanks again for your suggestion.

Hi Peter,

Just updated my Mis-Fire topic. The RAC will do an inspection for a very reasonable fee and act as arbitrators subject to Porsche being willing to accept this.

Only problem now is the old engine's nearly reassembled ready for exchange and I don't want the specialist to backtrack (he's been supportive enough as it is). Anyway I'll talk to Porsche and see what they say. Nothing ventured etc.

New engine has arrived at the OPC ready for collection by the specialist early next week.

The RAC have offered to assist and have said they'd do some initial work with the photos I've sent to them to make sure they have the right level of expertise. Apparently one of their specialists is an ex-Porsche mechanic so I hope that will be an advantage. Porsche have also confirmed verbally that they will recognise and accept The RAC as a trusted report-provider. Whether they will take positive action on any resulting report will remain to be seen but at least it's a couple of steps further forward.

Have a good weekend.

The RAC have recommended a company called Scientifics in Oldbury, West Midlands. Contact is David Chapman 0121-552-1565. I've sent him the set of photos I sent to Porsche GB & RAC and await his response. His initial estimate was £500-£600 for a full test. My Mis-Fire post has been updated.
