Autotrader any good?

Hi all

Just after some advice if possible please.
I am trying to sell my 944 turbo. I posted here briefly and put it in
autotrader for a 2 week online slot but got nothing but a few nuisance calls.
I'm thinking that ebay is my only option?

Dominic.

As it's a specialist car, e-bay may be good, but I would also try the specialist publications -911 & Porsche World. If you're a Porsche Club member, the Porsche Post is also a good bet.

Also of course depends on how much you want for it!!

thanks Carl.
I'm not a porsche club member or anything. Thanks for the specialist magazine recommendation...think i am coming to the conclusion that ebay is the place to sell nowadays.

When I sold my 944S in the Autotrader in January, I had 48 phone calls and the first to see it bought it. Must have been too cheap :).

Always put "NO CANVASSERS" in the ad or you get plagued to death.

The trouble with eBay is that everybody wants things cheap but it does give you a good chance to list loads of high-quality photos and a comprehensive description.

When you give viewers an good, honest description of your car on eBay and start the bidding price low, then you can get a good price.

I would agree that target publications like 911 PW, Porsche Post or GT Purely are good ideas as you are hitting an interested audience.

Just remember to prepare the car as meticulously as you can. Buyers paint a mental picture of themselves driving a clean car and appreciate acar that has been loved and cherished.

A good valet adds hundreds of pounds to the perceived value.

Hope this helps

What about Pistonheads? If I were looking for a 944 I'd look there, eBay and the Trader. I wouldn't bother with 911 & Cayman World as everything in there is way overpriced, and what sort of person wanting to sell a car can be bothered to wait the sort of lead time they need? Last time I looked at Porsche Post (some time ago I admit) the ads were rubbish as there are no colour pics. What about sale or return with a specialist if you really want it gone?

You really ought to take another look - there are colour photos in the current issues adverts [8D]

Hi Fen

Whats 'sale or return with a specialist'?
I would guess that you give them the car to sell & if they sell they take commission..if
they don't after a certain time you have to take it back?
Do you know any specialists?
Thanks in advance

D.

Perhaps, if not contravening any forum etiquette, I'd suggest posting your car's particulars here again on this thread as it may have piqued some interest ;)

I don't get PP as I'm not a member (despite what it says under my name), hence not having seen it for a while.

Sorry, sale or return is exactlt what you surmise. I sold a 911 that way through 911 Virgin; the premium they achieved by selling as a trader went a long way to offsetting the commission they charged and I think Henry returned me about £250 less than I had been prepared to accept privately (but had not been offered of course), plus he covered the advertising costs and dealt with the tyre kickers. I bought the car from him which may have predisposed him to take it back, but I think most of the specialist dealers who would look at retailing a 944 would be happy to sell a decent car for a customer - from their point of view it's inventory without having capital tied up.

I sold my old 944 on Autotrader no problems, but I did put it in the magazine itself not just the website.
Got a good number of calls and the second viewer bought the car.
I would also echo Fen's advice re Pistonheads - that's where I'd be looking as well as on here if I were after another one.

I'd say to give you the best chance you should advertise in as many places as you want to splash out for adverts for. I know when I'm looking for a car I look in all the trading rags like Auto Trader, on ebay, in the local paper, Loot, the noticeboards at work - just about anywhere. Although I hate the whole "this car is advertised elsewhere so seller may withdraw from auction at any time" thing with ebay it's a good safety net if the bidding isn't going as high as you hopes towards the end - you can always withdraw. I actually got my 944 through Exchnge and Mart of all places from someone who was also advertising in PP.
