Auxilliary air pump

Hi All,

My auxilliary air pump has seized and snapped it's pulley belt. There was a spectacular display of smoke and squealing, then the belt broke. Now the car seems to run quietly and smoothly.
So, what is the purpose of the auxilliary air pump? And more importantly, is it safe to drive the car without it or do I need to spend £450 replacing it?

Thanks in advance for your advice

Brian

Hi :)

It does precisely nothing...lol

Well what it actually does is pump EXTRA air into the exhaust to help pass emissions tests in the USA...

You dont need it but.....

What I did was as follows and at least I am honest lol...

I decided after reading it wasnt needed at all, was to cut the belt.....

Bright idea I "THOUGHT"......until I suddenly realised that the Viscous fan was NOT turning afterwards lol..because the same belt I just cut drives the viscous fan as well...

So the answer was to get a SMALL belt (from memory it was around 21 inches long) and fit that to the viscous fan and go straight down to the crank pulley....you have to remove the v.fan to fit this as its actually bolting the v.fan back on that tensions the small belt....

The other choice I had was to totally remove the v.fan and buy a set of twin Kenlowes to fit on the back of the main rad to replace the v.fan......cost from Kenlowe for a twin kit was around £400 or around £7 for the small belt :)...so the belt got fitted...

Now.....if that belt is broken..your v.fan isnt working...and the only cooling you will have is the aircon fan in front of the front aircon rad....not too serious in this weather....but DONT get stuck in traffic....it wont handle the heat on its own...

Hope this helps :)

All the best Brett :)

Hi :)

ALL 928 owners are amazing lol :)

Just had a thought..make sure your v.fan is turning as it "could" have been that ,that seized in the first place....just try and spin it by hand....(engine NOT running..if you want to keep your fingers)

All the best Brett :)

Thanks again Brett,
The air pump is jammed solid - fan seems ok.

On an unrelated (and far lessinteresting) note - why does my message appear as "non-member"? I have entered my member number in the profile, thought that would sort it?
