Although it says the max. dimensions are 145 px x 145 px, they can be smaller... so you could have the width 145 and the height 61 (which is the height of the actual picture);
I've tried re-sizing some of my pix on photoshop, but it seems to want to do it proportionally re size, but still struggle to get it below the 20kbs requirement -any suggestions???

You can send them to me and I'll do them if you like.
Use Image>Image size... to resample (resize the image)... set one dimension to what you require, i.e. 145 pixels width (set 'Bicubic' or 'Bicubic sharper' see which result works best and go back and redo if not happy).... then if you require a different height dimension use either 'Image>Canvas size', or, use the crop tool. (set the rulers to pixels in the 'Edit>Preferences' menu - the select the 'Info' palette before using the crop tool on the image... it will tell you what size your crop tool selection is as you do it) to crop the image to the exact size you require.
What version of PS have you got, Melv? Anything CS2 or later (I have CS2 on one machine and CS4 on another) should have 'Image Ready' installed... when your image is resized as you want it and you're ready to save it choose 'File>Save for Web' (or 'File>Save for Web & Devices' in CS4)... the parameters are pretty self explanatory and usually the default settings will be sufficient to make the file small while retaining quality... an a 145 x 145 JPG for an avatar should come out under 6kb. GIF's although lower colour res (256 colours) are larger files than JPG's (16 million colours).
If you're on an earlier version of PS you might have to go into the options when saving and adjust the JPG compression... can go horribly wrong if you don't know what you're doing though.

First, resized and cropped to 145 x 100 (with some artistically close cropping! [8|]) and saved with the normal 'Save As' settings comes out at approx. 30kb...
Same image saved with Image Ready 'Save for Web'...
...is only 10Kb! (bigger than the 6Kb I said earlier because there's a lot of colour in it - but still half the specified maximum for an avatar)
