Avon ZZR Tyres - Feedback

Elite Garages in Mannings Heath are able to supply these tyres direct from Avon. The largest fitment Avon currently produce fit 18" wheels (225 and 265) so bought a set in preference to Michelin Cups for this years track days. They are constructed using Avons group N Slick compound and have sabre cuts in them to shift water. In tests the ZZR was only around a second a lap behind a full slick. The side walls are as stiff as they can be and the compound really soft - although this strangely doesn't mean they wear quickly!

After a day at Goodwood I can report that they demonstrated as much dry grip (probably more) than the Cups but with a lot less wear. After 5 x 15 minute sessions the reduction in rubber couldn't be measured using a depth gauge and tyres have visually less wear than the Cups I used last year. The side walls are much stiffer making for a bumpier ride to the circuit but they give a more positive direction change. Oodles of grip, you can really lean on the rears - they never missed a beat at Goodwood - even with my massive brakes the ABS didn't chirp once!

What are they like in the wet? Caught in torrential rain on the M25 just after having fitted then they just ran fine - no drama. At speeds in excess of the legal limit I felt comfortable and even through shallow standing water they coped fine. So again pretty much like a Cups again, good in the wet when new but I suspect that the wet weather ability will deteriorate with use.

All in all I would say that they offer the same or better performance for less wear (hence £s) and with stiffer sidewalls more positive direction change.

Not as much as we first thought:-

964 hubs and bespoke caliper brackets. New brake lines. 5mm spacers to allow the wheels to clear the calipers.

I need to fit a brake proportioning valve as the rears are too strong at the moment when you really go for the brakes!

All work done by Bob Watson and Geoff Everett (ex-Amd).
