Axle noise anyone?

I would be intrested to hear from anybody regarding levels of axle whine on 944 models.
I have a 1986 lux model and when I ease off the accellerator get a slight whine(nothing major) Is there anything to put in the oil to quieten the noise or do I just live with it?As I say it is probably acceptable considering the age of the vehicle but if I can improve it I would.

My S2 had the gearbox rattle (layshaft?) when idling in neutral, but this was quieter after I'd got the oil level topped up at the last service. A lesson there, I think! Apparently "they're all like that" and this was a common warranty job in its day. I might try Swepco when I can get around to it.

Meanwhile we've got tailgate mechanism problems.....all the annoying little bits on the cable and linkage have given up at the same time. A visit to Design 911 next Monday might sort it with luck.

I believe the rattle is a bearing and the car can run for many thousands of trouble free miles with it. On my car it only happens in neutral with the clutch engaged. As I depress the clutch pedal to engage 1st it disappears. But the transaxel does whine when off the accellarator.

Mine does it too when I come off the accelerator, but it's done 148k miles now, so some noise is to be expected I suppose. I'd also be happy to hear suggestions to quieten it down a bit though, especially as I am soon to eliminate the knocking noise from the front ball joints.....

best bet is to get a heavy rubber backed hatch carpet to put under or over yours . I got an old 928 one for my Lux it worked a treat and cut the noise down lots. You could always put some thick carpet underlay under the hatch carpets.
