Baby seat advice

I've got an '02 Boxster S and a little one on the way, due in Feb. We're planning to keep the car for my wife to use day to day and we've got a big, practical family wagon for the rest of the time. I know we need to get the airbag deactivator kit fitted, but not sure what to do re. the baby seat. Porsche sell an ISOFIX baby seat for £550 (for 0-18mths) but the car doesn't have ISOFIX fittings so it would be fitted just using the standard seat belt fittings. Does anyone know of any other rear facing baby seats that would fit the Boxster? Thanks in advance.

I too am going to become a dad but in April, so would be very interesting in any comments. In addition, does anyone have any suggestions for forwarding facing seats for say 9 months onwards. What are people's view's on the Recaro range ? Also I am considering buying a 'Neatseat' from Mothercare which protects the seat from wear and tear caused by baby seats and any unfortunate spillages etc

By the way, congratulations on your good news..

Regards
David

I'm afraid you don't have an option with the child seats - I'm pretty certain it's Porsche seats or nothing. You need to disable the airbag in both cases, particularly for the rear-facing seat. The gizmo that does the disabling on the 986 (can't comment on the 987) is essentially mechanical - it's basically an additional seat-belt unit that sits under the front of the passenger seat, and the Porsche child-seat comes with the corresponding buckle (on a reel) that you slot into the unit to disable the air-bag. When I got mine, about 3 years ago, the gizmo for disabling the airbag cost about £150, including installation, and £350 for a forward facing seat (iso-fix, but obviously only secured in the boxster with the seat belt) that will cater for a child from 9months to 6years. Not cheap by any means (especially since I've not used it very often).

Congrats to you both BTW. The seats may be expensive but it's fun bringing them out for a spin when they get to the age where they are amazed when the roof disappears. Perhaps fleabay?

We had a Boxster when our son was born and used the Porsche baby seat rear facer with the airbag deactivation. (986 Boxster btw). When he grew up to a front facer, I used the rear facer in the footwell for the airbag deactivation and used our isofix car seat (on the belt) on the seat. We've got a brittax and it fitted into the seats ok. Now traded up to a KN to accomodate the other stuff you need as well ( Wife, pushchair etc).

We've still got the Porsche baby seat (bought it from Solihull with club discount) - open to offers, if anyone interested

As long as the rear facing seat fits correctly and is secure and that the airbag has been deactivated I think you can use any make of child seat.

Our Maxi-cosi something or other fits without a problem in the Boxster (without Isofix) but you must have the deactivation gizmo fitted for the airbag.

Tony,

how do you deactivate the airbag when using a non-Porsche child-seat? Do you have a 987 and is the activation process now different to the 986?.

Ah, well, you actually have to take your car to an OPC and have a deactivation switch fitted. I believe the cost is about 120-150.

Is this on the more recent models? Is it just a simple on/off switch now instead of the silly extra seat-belt buckle & clasp arrangement that I had to have fitted to my 986.

Hi,

Not sure on the 986, I have a 987 and had the porsche kit fitted (only option!). This includes Isofix connection for the passenger seat and a deactivation switch for the passenger airbag. Cost for kit including fitting around 400 pounds (you can't fit it yourself as software changes are required for the airbag deactivation.

Once fitted you can use baby seats from any reputable manufacturer - suggest you look at Which? magazine for best advice. My son has been in mine since his first birthday (now 2) and loves it!

I beleive the kit for the 986 is simpler and cheaper but not sure whether you have to use a Porsche seat. Check with your OPC.

Congrats on the new addition to the family!

Nick

the 986 kit requires a Porsche child-seat, which you get fleeced for. Glad to see you can choose any child-seat with the 987 as the Porsche seats are more than double the cost of the other reputable brands of seat.

Hi there,
Thought I'd give you an update on where I managed to get to with the baby seat investigations. If you've got a 986, Porsche will tell you the only option is to buy the ISOFIX baby seat at around £660 plus the cost of getting the airbag deactivation kit supplied & fitted, around £220.

But on further investigation, the 986 does not come with ISOFIX fittings so there's no real benefit in getting the ISOFIX seat. www.porscheshop.co.uk sells a seat called the Porsche baby safe seat for about £130 which incorporates the buckle you need to fit into the airbag deactivation kit, although this seat is only suitable up to about 9 mths old. I also found a Porsche specialist locally who could fit the kit for about £140, so all in all saving a lot!

After 9 months if you still decide to keep the car, you can get a Junior seat for about £415 which is suitable from 9mths - 7 yrs I think, so it's still cheaper in the long run than getting the ISOFIX one at £660.

Hope the above info helps but let me know if you've got any other questions. Good luck for the new arrival in April!

Hi, Thank you for the update, which is appreciated. I too have a 986 and when I made enquiries with my OPC I was told that I could only use their deactivation kit and seats.

Since speaking to my OPC I have been in two minds as to what to do. I'm only looking to get a seat from 9 months onwards, as I will only be using it for approx. 2 days a week (to take little'n to grandparents to look after...) However, the other half would rather I/we saved the money and used it for baby and we shared the family car!, which incidentally I'm looking to change!

Therefore I'm still undecided but at least I have 11 months or so to come to a decision....

Thanks again and hope all is on target for the new arrival in Feb.. We've just had a 4D Baby Image Scan (given to us as an xmas present) which is truly amazing and gives so much reassurance.

Kind regards
David
