Baby seat for a 993??

Mike M

New member
I'm due my 1st baby early next year and apart from crapping myself generally, im worrying if my Porsche is still going to get used. So as to convince myself theres no need to sell it, I'm looking for advice from anyone regarding rear seat baby seats for a new born+. Any pointers will be hugely appreciated. I currently own a 1994-993, not sure if the year is relevant within the 993.

How is the missus??? Mine didnt seem to mind sitting in the back, maybe as she is not much taller than 5ft! Now my little one is in a forward facing car seat so she will be relocated to the rear of the car. Have you got a car seat yet or travek system??

If not we found the maxi cosi canbrifix to be good with a fixed base in the front of my car. We also have one for sale complete with an entire quinny buzz package if interested, Not sure if you have push chair yet tho.

Mike, I am not sure where you live, but the guys to call are Quick Fit Safety Belts in Stanmore, Middlesex - they could recommend a rear facing seat, but I don't think they recommend one for the rear - I could be wrong but that was the situation 3 years ago. Plenty of room in the front though!

My wife did not want to sit in the back so my car did a poor 1,000 miles when our first born arrived. QFSB then recommended the forward facing Mamas and Papas Sicura for the back as a first seat - I know these have been discontinued but they will have a new recommendation.

FYI I am now using the Maxi Cosi Rodi for the rear as Sophie is now nearly 4 ... and the mileage is going back on the car!

We used a porsche rear facing baby seat in the front. We had to have an airbag disabling kit installed. Its a bar with a seatbelt type buckle mounted under the front seat. (not sure if this applied to all years of 993)
We still occasionally use the deactivating bar with a forward facing seat now that my kids are older.
Seat is in excellent condition and my wife will probably be sticking it on ebay in the very near future unless someone on here would be interested in it.
Cheers
Stephen

Think I'll be in the same boat as you Shane, may have to forget about the first year or so until the back becomes more useable. Mind you I suppose the wife and the little one can go out together in her car, allowing me to meet up with them in the Porsche, at least I wont get a running commentary on my driving!!

Guys, I am still unclear as to which forward facing seat for the rear will fit my 1994 C2. My daughter is 18 months old so I am looking for a Group 1 seat.

I have spent most of the afternoon trying different ones but they are all way too big. Looks like the Wife might get her way after all but I sincerely hope not!!

Help!

There was a post on here from someone previous who has a mamas and papas protec fitrted in the rear of his 993, well 2 of them actually which would be fine for an 18 month old baby depending on there weight. So long as they are over 9Kg i think there fine. Also check out the fisher price safe voyage 3 or the britax safe voyage. I have not tried this yet as my car is away for work but looking at it the shape looks good.

I have a three part grey Porsche seat (prince) which fitted in the rear of 993 and is now surplus to requirements. No 993 and only need a booster cushion.

Seat is in three parts - booster cushion , back rest and front retainer bar which opens to retain the normal seat belt.

Did a good job for our son and the covers come off for washing.

If you are interested pm me and I will send you some pictures.

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin, thanks for that appreciate it. I would rather go for something other than the Porsche seat and preferably new. Tried the Mamas and Papas Protech as suggested in one of the threads and found my rear seatbelt wasnt long enough to secure around the front of the seat!! Oh Joy - back to the drawing board or get new seatbelts fitted!!

No problem ... two options to extend the seat belt ...one is scrap yard and get a longer intact belt or go to the specialist seat belt people mentioned previously.

Good luck with your search.

Cheers
Kevin

It's me who's got the twin M&P ProTec seats in the back. Both the belt and the belt buckle need to be lengthened - the belt to get physically around the seat and the buckle to avoid 'crunch' as it's called (otherwise the buckle is in the wrong position). The rear seat base and back remain in place when fitting the child seat. Quickfit SBS (nothing to do with the exhaust and tyre centres) in Stanmore did the work and would wholly recommend them to anyone. The ProTec base is a bit deeper than the car seat so overlaps the edge a bit, but they are rock solid with the belt properly adjusted - rock the car trying to move them.

It's a bit of a sqeeze in the back for the boys (18mths old now) in terms of leg room (their legs certainly have no room to dangle down behind the drivers seat; I keep the passenger seat fully slid forward), so if you're much over 5'8" you'll have to compromise your driving position. I take the boys into nursery daily on my way to work and have had no complaints so far(OK so their vocabulary is limited to "more", "car", "dark", "bunny"and "baubal" - I'm still working on "Porsche").

excellent, thanks Stewart. Did you try any other seats before you bought the Pro Tec? I wonder if there are any that would not overlap the seat, but as you said it was rock steady?

I guess I would be better of buying it first and then going off to SBS to do the belts?

I spoke to SBS first who recommended the ProTec (they had fitted one successfully in a 964), so to be honest I didn't consider any other seat (having discounted going for risky second hand purchase). I then managed to get the seats themselves in a M&P sale (and negotiated a bit more off for being a hard up parent of twins.... OK so I didn't say they would be fitted into a Porsche) and took them over to SBS for a pre-booked fitting of the belts. They fully demonstrated fitting the seats etc. Apart from taking the seats out for this year's LeMans trip, they now just stay fitted in the back. Given the daily trips to nursery, my boys recognise the sound of the 911 engine now - apparently they both run to the nursery back door to wait for me when they hear me coming up the drive!

Here's a pic of my 2 monkeys sleeping soundly! The baby seat is a Klippan Siccuro, also recommended by Stanmore. The debate on 2nd hand seats and the Siccuro has been done before. They checked it for me and I have to say I couldn't be happier. Reclines nicely in the Cab and good leg-room, so no Jelly necking! Not sure about the orange but hey ho!
Happy xmas.

excellent, thats what we like to hear. Nothing like the kids recognising the sound of the Porsche from an early age. Glad to hear they have their priorities right!

Thanks for al your help - much appreciated.
