You need to have the child seat preparation module fitted under the passenger seat and then activated using the PST or PIWIS. Only Porsche child seats have the extra buckle for you to insert in the the buckle on the child seat preparation module to deactivate the airbag. Have a look at this link from Carnewal : http://www.carnewal-europe.com/main.htm. The module is very easy to fit - it only takes 5 minutes or so to do it. After that it is a matter of having it activated by someone with the PST or PIWIS. Incidentally if you are looking for one I have one for sale as my new car came with one and I had removed mine from the old car prior to sale. Although fitted to my old car, I never used it so it is in as new condition.
Not sure which model of Boxster you have but I had the Child seat prep fitted in my 06 Cayman S. It costs around £295 + VAT at a Porsche Centre. They install the airbag disable switch (you turn it with your key; it's fitted on the side of the dash board on the passenger side like most cars) and Isofix anchor points on the passenger seat. I am a little confused, it has been confirmed that I can only have the deactivation bar and not the key switch fitted to our 986, which is fine and Porsche warranty have said that this must be fitted by an OPC in order to maintain the warranty, that I am happy with.
The next issue is the seat, Porscheshop.co.uk have recommended the Recaro seat and separate buckle rather than the Porsche seat as the Porsche seat has no harness and just relies on the main car seat belt, is that correct? If it is then I am keen to have a seat that has its own harness built in, then my child will be more secure and the seat will remain firmly in place and not risk moving every time the child is taken out of the car.
Is the separate buckle as safe as using a Porsche seat? If so can I use any brand of quality car seat, as we have a Maxi Cosi in our Mercedes and that is fantastic.

That is correct. The original Porsche seat does not have a harness and relies on the car's seat belt to hold the child and seat in place. Again you are right in that it is not as safe a system as those with a harness.
However, to counter that. If you use the Recaro seat and a separate belt to deactivate the airbag, the insurance company can say you are using a modified safety system not recommended by Porsche. Also Porsche themselves can say the same thing should something go wrong even though you and I know that the Recaro and separate seat belt method will not cause any problems. Think about it, if OPCs are fit to say that the warranty for the whole car is null and void because you use non-Porsche branded wipers or battery, what would they say about you using a non-standard child seat and airbag deactivation method. Just food for thought.
Finally, the Porsche warranty is only null and void if non-Porsche parts are used. If you buy the part and fit it in 5 minutes, any indy can activate it for you. It takes about 5 minutes to do and that includes turning on the computer. Porsche will charge you about £300 plus vat to do the job.
When I had only 1 child I used a Maxi Cosi Tobi behind the passenger seat and the seat was pushed fully forward to create leg room. When the 2nd one came along, I tried the Tobi behind me (driver's seat) but there was not enough leg room for my child even though I'm only 5ft 8. Hence I had to get the Porsche seats to get enough leg room. BTW BMW seats are identical to the Porsche ones but I don't think they have the additional airbag deactivation belt.
