Baby Seat !!!!

Franck

New member
Hi All,

New addtion is coming to the family [:)] (a baby, not a new Porsche !!!).

I am therefore really interested in hearing from members about baby seats for Porsche. I do not believe that seats are compatible with all models. Does any one have any recommendations, advice on what brands, models, where to buy, are the Porsche baby seats any good ?

Ideally, if someone knows of a baby seat that would fit both the SC and the 993 Targa it would be great but my priority is the SC (at least I won't have this problem with the 914 when its finished [:D][:D][:D]).

I read contradicting reports that a 3 point seat belt has to be fitted at the rear in the SC but somewhere else it stated that it was not necessary. What is the right thing to do ?

All advice appreciated.

thanks

Congrats in advance Franck, kids and 911's go together well IMO.

You will need two seats, one for when they are tiny and one for when they are a bit bigger.

The baby seat will put them rear-facing and three pointers are better for these but not essential. There is a proper Porsche baby seat on ebay at the minute. Link to it here.

When they get bigger you need the next level up - I have a Prince seat in grey (same as that baby seat colour) and it works in the back of the SC and everything later too. Porsche do it in other colours and there are two on eBay at the minute; here and here. Also check this thread out.

Thanks John,

Great advice and one less headache. Will watch these ebay auctions with great attention

If you want to get a non-Porsche manufactured (and substantially cheaper) alternative, I have a Britax Freeway in my 911SC.

Fits perfectly and apparently Britax are the most heavily tested Child Seats in the world. Cost about €130 so I guess it'd be £100 and will last from 10 months to 3 years.

Mine's also colour coded to my Marine Blue car :) . As I only have lap belts I did jury-rig a second luggage strap behind the rear seating panel for extra stability.

My last Prince seat cost £55 and I just bought another for £75, both good as new, so they're out there cheaper than you think (though they tend to go for good money on eBay).

The Porsche quality leaves the Britax way behind for long-term durabililty. I have 3 or 4 other cars and we use Britax/Mamas and Papas in the others. The M&P's wear well but the Britax covers on ours seemed to shred pretty quickly once they had a few washes. Having said that, I've never paid more than £30 for a Britax seat on eBay and the replacement covers are cheap too.

The best thing about the Prince for me is it works a treat with lap belts, which is important when your car is missing the B & C posts [8D]

I've had a Porsche Prince & a britax freeway which I use in the back of my 2.4S.

I prefer the Britax, which I also use in my subaru. It fits very well and my daughter prefers it. My problem now is, as my daughter nears her 3rd birthday I need to find a suitable booster style seat

[:D]

best bit of advice would be to take the Porsche down to Mothercare and try a Britax & see what you think.

This lot are meant to quite knowledgeable too ( although I have not spoken to them) http://www.quickfitsbs.co.uk/

Hi Franck

I've 2 kds seats in my SC. Will check the details at the weekend and let you know.

The seats were supplied fitted with the car from 911virgin who use a specialist. 3 point belts were required and I was advised that it is the correct way to do it.

The 2 seats that 911 Virgin fitted to my SC were:

* Mamas and Papas Sicuro.
Suitable from Birth to 15kg or approx 6 yrs although personally I wouldn't use it past 4-5 yrs depending on the size / weight of the child. Great quality seat. Works well. I just leave it in so can't comment on how easy it is to move - it does fit very, very securely.

*Britax " Kid".
Suitable for 15KG to 36KG approx 4yrs to 11yrs. 2 part seat that can be used as just a booster. Very easy to transfer to another car. Also looks cool and is comfy so my 5 year old really likes it. If he ever makes enough mess for it to need washing I'd be very surprised.

Both seats are secured using modern retrofitted 3 point inertia reel seat belts (also via http://www.911virgin.com ).

Personally I didn't have to think too hard about getting new seat belts put in. If a car won't take a 3 point belt that's one thing but if it will, I think you owe it to yourself and your kid to get new 3 point belts put in. Even if you can get a car seat that will fit securely with a lap belt you have to be sure that the 20 year old lap belts won't break if it comes to it - so then you are looking at new lap belts and it is a short step to new 3 point belts..

While you are at it, it might be worth taking a close look at the belts in the front. No-one likes to think about nerfing their pride and joy.... but there ain't no air bags, collapsible steering column or super shock absorbing cabin surfaces in the front of an SC as far as I noticed!

If you want someone to supply and fit and Watford/ M25 North is not too far, let me know and I will get the details off Henry/ Tom at 911 Virgin.
