Baby seats in 997 & Tracker

Dear All,

I am new to this forum and am eagerly awaiting delivery of my 997S (basalt black, sports seats, sports chrono plus). I have 2.5 year old twins that I want to experience their first Porsche. What child seats fit, should I be ordering them from the main dealer?
Also my insurance wants a tracking device fitted has anyone got recomendations, they approve Tracker Horizon, RAC trackstar + and Navtrak Proactive.

Thanks

James

Apart from 'Porsche Insurance', most of the companies I contacted wanted some form of tracking device. I think the RAC Trackstar seems the best bet as you can get the 'Safety Camera' warning system included. The write up blurb seems quite good as its GPS based, transferable to another car and not much more than the basic Tracker.
Can't advise about the baby seats though - been there, done that![:D]

I have 2 kids and use my 996 with them all the time

I have a 9 month old and a 3.5 year old - the 3.5 year old has been using a booster seat (£15-20 in halfords) for just under a year which allows him to sit further back in the seat as opposed to a full baby seat and gives him more room - test it, but you will probably find that you will be OK with your 2.5 year olds (my brother uses a booster seat for his 2.5 year old in one of his cars OK) - seatbelt height is the main thing to look at here - make sure it is coming over their shoulder, not around the neck etc - this can be adjusted by making the belt come around the side of the rear seat or over the top of it, whichever suits best. The 9month old is using the porsche prince car seat in the back which i find works just fine.

We have fitted enough stuff to go on long weekends with them and have a 2 week european driving holiday in September to do with them!

Regards the tracker - I have navtrak proactive ADR in both of our cars and have found it to be a fantastic system - you have a card which i keep in my wallet and it automatically deactivates the system when i enter either car - the unit will telephone navtrak if the car is started without the presence of the card - ie if it is stolen with the keys. Navtrak are one of the most efficient/polite companies i have ever dealt with in any walk of life - worth the money on its own. The fitters are well experienced too, and used to working on expensive cars and will travel to your home or work to do it

Have fun

Cheers
Paul

I got Tracker Horizon which has GPS tracking but like all these devices is over-priced for what it is.
Get it fitted by Tracker directly and not the Porsche Centre as I have noticed that they mark up the installation charge by more than 10%

I too have a Tracker Horizon. Good call on the price. I am that wally that ask OPC to sort it out, close to a grand. Nice one[:D]

James,

Following the arrival of my baby daughter last year, I purchased the Porsche Prince [9 months to 4 years / 9-18kg] so she could travel in my Boxster from 9 months+.

Not sure if you're familiar with the Porsche Prince? Manufactured by Britax and it's just basically a rigid polystyrene shell, but extremely lightweight so perfect for taking on holiday. The Porsche Prince is no longer featured on the Porsche website as I believe this has been replaced with the new Porsche Junior ISOFIX [9 months -7 years], which combines two groups so more mileage: http://www2.uk.porsche.com/english/gbr/accessories/911_997teq/kindersitze.htm

Rather than paying a premium for one, or two in your case, you could try one of the following 2 independent Porsche suppliers:

http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/seat_belts_child_seats_porsche_cars.html
http://www.jasmine-motorsport.co.uk/shop/index.htm

Just the other week, I was looking for a new group 1 car seat to replace the group 0+ for our daughter's main chariot and used the Britax Fit-Finder http://www.britax.co.uk/index.htm While there I noticed that their recommendations for Porsche are seriously out of date, the 968 being the last model added to their list. However, their recommendations for our BMW 525 Touring were really beneficial though. Based on this info I opted for their Eclipse Si and it fits perfectly on all 3 rear seats. From this exercise I learned that Halfords charge a premium for their car seats! The MRRP for an Eclipse Si limited edition is £110, yet Halfords wanted £130. I got the same one from http://www.kiddicare.com/icat/carseats for £76 with free delivery.

On the Tracker front, I opted for Monitor and am perfectly happy with it. One time my car had to be recovered to an OPC, as soon as it had been loaded onto the back of the recovery truck, I had Tracker phoning my mobile telling me they had received an illegal movement signal from my car. I think on my next new car I'll probably opt for Horizon or even Echo to take advantage of the extra technology. Let's face it"¦I don't think we'll see a reduction in auto crime unless our leaders get tough with the pond life responsible!

Enjoy your new 997"¦

Andy

I had a tracker Horizon fitted prior to collection. The cost to have it fitted was less than quoted elsewhere. Wouldn't give a PCGB discount though [&:].
Just picked up the car with it all done, lazy I know but it did work out cheaper..and yes I was shocked!!

I sold my 996 Cab last year when we had a baby and bought a Ferrari 456M as it takes a rear-facing baby seat in the back. Now she's coming up to 9 months I was wondering about switching to a 997S as she can go in a forward-facing seat I believe. Reading the above I just wanted to check if anyone knows the Britax model (in the UK) that will go in the back of the 997 (probably coupe not cab).
The OPC person I spoke to seemed to think the model for a 9M baby needed to go in the front seat (and the photo on the Porsche site shows front only). I presume that's not right based on other comments here and on the Autobahn forum. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks in advance,
JQ

My car has a Tracker Horizon fitted, but my insurance Company, Liverpool Victoria don't insist that one is fitted.

Picking up my 997S cab in March, I have a three year old, will i have probelms with a booster seat in the back of the CAB as the rear seats are almost vertical unlike the coupe.

I hope i get some positive feed back, my wife has said to me since I ordered it " I don't know why you have bought that for it's so impractical" She actually didn't say it as niceley as that if you know what i mean!

Regards

Roger

My seven year old sits in the back of my 997s cab with no problem. I don't see why it should be any different for a three year old on a booster seat.

Re your other comment, at one stage pre-delivery, my fifteen year old made reference to 'that stupid car'. I wonder where he got that from [:D][:D].

My response was that if I hadn't been paying school fees for him I would have had my dream car ten years ago [:D][:D]
