Back-end slip or new user problem?!

Hi All, I am 'new' C2S owner for 3 weeks now; not very mechanically-minded other than having keen interest and wanting to maintain car to extremely high standard. I can conduct basic checks, but nitty-gritty problem investigation / correction will be farmed out to suitable OPC / specialist.

Car is factory-standard, but as part of purchase negotiation, seller replaced previous 17 inch cups with 18 inch turbo's and new Bridgestone boots all round. Geometry was last checked 6 months ago when 17 inch cups were fitted, but seller thought ride with new wheels and tryres was good with no immediate need to recheck geometry.

However, on uneven roads the ride is quite bumpy, with the back-end seeming to 'slip' a little left or right. Much worse when even hint of ice! This could just be the 'user' e.g. me getting used to a very different type of car than previously owned / driven, or have I got a problem?

Is it normal tramlining due to 18 inch turbo's, or does geometry need checking or has anyone any other suggestions as to what might be happening?

I run the 18's on my C2S and my shock need replacing..... The tram lining does seem to be getting worse recently.

We changed tyre pressure at weekend to be 35/40, but I have not tested change yet as we had more snow yesterday. The geomtry was done by OPC, who also did 47k mile service in July last year, so wouldn't that have identified any possible problem with shocks? Anyway, the car has 47k on clock and to my knowledge they have not been replaced recently, maybe never. Is there an easy way to check whether or not they need replacing?

OPC PPI my car and missed the rear shocks !!! JZ told me about them when I had the front shocks sorted !! As Maurice mentioned the standard shocks do not last that long. If yours are from 0 miles then more than likely need replacing.... and then you can look at a number of options.... (Search the 993 forum)
 
My car had original shocks and SO2 on 17", probably hadn't had geometry check for yrs. It was going all over the place, back end was practcally dancing whenever there's the slightest bit of damp. Even our Smart car could out corner it on wet.
Had the shocks replaced and full alignment done by JZ last yr, changed back to P-Zero, the car was d different animal all together.
The shocks are probably the one to go for here, as more than likely they're gone as Maurice said. I'd thought the alignment would need to be checked again after changing wheel size?
 
Thanks for response Mick. Just want to make sure that I understand your last comment (typo?); are you saying that alignment should need rechecking or should not (if wheel size changes)?
 
Sorry, didn't make it too clear. I'm no expert but form what I gathered the alignment should at least be checked if there's a wheel size change. I'm sure the others will give you a more definate answer.

I change my wheels and tyres from 18" to 17" and back again all the time and as previously stated makes no difference to the way the wheels are pointing.

Looks like you've found the answer to your loose back end though!

My car came with 17s. Late last summer I thought that the car was getting somewhat floaty through corners but before I could get it looked at I got a new set of 18s to fit onto the car. Duly fitted them to the car and holy cr*p the car was awful to drive. Skittish and all over the place.

Took car to garage to discover rear shocks were so bad one was leaking fluid. As soon as the car comes out of hibernation it will be off to the garage to get M030 fitted with Bilstein HDs so expect the handling with 18s to be finally OK. The suspension on these cars seems very sensitive to worn parts.
