bad vibration

The car - 993 C4 pre varioram.
Have recently had full service, mo30 kit and 18" rims with new p.zero tyres.

I have been experiancing a vibration threw the car. It is very rare it happens but it happens. Sometimes when I have accelerated hard the car suddenly starts vibrating, almost like you have a puncture or similar. I slow the car down stop, drive off again and its fine. I can try and induce it by driving hard but it does not happen again.

Has anybody any clues before I book it into the garage. Its so hard to find an intermitant fault.

Thank you

Stephen

There are lots of things it could be. The first thing I would do is jack up each corner check the wheels are spinning OK without any lateral movement. The next thing would be to remove each wheel and carefully inspect each tyre including the sidewalls. The intermittent nature suggests tyres as they are prone to change shape with speed.

That's just my two pence worth.

Hi - where does the vibration come from - the front / back / left right?

Can you feel it through the steering wheel, or through the body (or both)

Pete

Have you had your wheels balanced recently? It may be that one of the weights has fallen off. Have a good check inside your wheels to see if there is any fresh sticky residue left behind that would indicate a lost weight.
This could also be a symptom of accumulated brake dust in the discs. Have a look in the drilled holes and if it is packed with dust, use a jet wash to clear them out.
I think there is also an issue with the position of the valve cap when you replace the wheels. I read on Rennlist somewhere that someone had a similar problem and they rotated their wheels to a certain position and the vibration dissappeared.

Thank you all for your replies. The vibration is through the whole car. I get the feeling it is coming from the back, it does not effect the steering wheel. I can also do miles and miles on different driving roads and it will not do it.I can drive it all week and not feel it, then all of a sudden it happens, I pull the car to a halt drive off again and its fine.
Its just that I can see myself booking it in at my garage and them finding nothing wrong as its so rare it happens.
Thank once again.

Hi,

Is it more pronounced / more likely to happen if you are accelerating hard, or pushing the car?

Pete

Hi,

Could it be something to do with the centre diff? Something breaking down when more power is being transferred to the front wheels? (just a guess, not based on any experience etc)

Pete

Thank you for your help. I will experiment a bit when out on road to try and narrow it down. Then will get it looked at.
Cheers.
