bad weather driving

Got a 91 Primera daily driver worth 25p, but 100% reliable.
Lent it to my cousin and have used my 3.2 for the past few days in wet weather including snow flurries and slippery wet country roads.

I haven't had a problem with safety (rear end slides, locking up under braking, etc) and I don't mind lack of PAS, so I'm wondering does anyone else use their 3.2 day in, day out, city and motorway, rain and shine?

All this time, I was treating it like a special occasions car, but because these things aren't really going up in value (no matter how good the condition of the car is), so what's the point of treating it like a garage queen?

So, I'd like to hear from anyone who uses theirs as a daily hack and what problems (if any) they've experienced.

Then I'll make my 3.2 my daily and get myself a new garage queen.

PS - Recently had 964 cams fitted. I'm not THAT impressed, but for what they cost, it was OK I spose. I wouldn't recommend it unless you're about to have a rebuild anyway.

I originally bought my 3.2 targa as a weekend (dry) car, but so enjoyed it, it has been my everyday car in all weathers for the past 15 months. It has never let me down mechanically, and if you are easy with the right foot, handling is no worse than any other car. My only big gripe with using a targa everyday is the ill fitting roof that is noisy and leaky. My rear offside dowel has snapped and very difficult to find anyone locally to fix/replace it, or find replacement recon roof. That aside, its a most enjoyable car that needs to be driven rather than garaged and pampered!

I don't know, all these whimps, not taking their cars out in inclement weather !

Mine goes out in torrential rain (when I couldn't even see the hard-shoulder, let alone pull on to it !), snow on the road all the way from Bordeaux to Le Havre (7.5 hours driving non-stop), ice, hot sunshine in the south of France, and any other combination.
Drive according to the conditions, same as any other car; no slides, holes in hedges, panic moments, no rust, no leaks. And 320 bhp. Need I say more ?

Absolutely! Get out there and do it, fix it when it breaks and remember that there`s a great support system which has nothing to do with the dreaded OPC network at your disposal.
At the end of the day your car is not a financial investment its an emotional investment go out and enjoy it!
Why do 911 owners always seem to have this dilemma?We don`t seem to have this discussion so frequently amongst us 944ers.

John - Have you had to do any gearbox strengthening mods or LSD to handle the 320hp?

JR - I've only recently realised that it's not a financial investment. I suppose that an enthusiast doesn't (or shouldn't) give a damn about how much time, money and effort went into getting it into its current (perfect) condition. I haven't for the past two years, having locked it up and pampered it. But I've slowly realised that if I don't enjoy the magic now, perhaps I may never do so for whatever reason that may crop up in future. After all, plenty of people buy a £15k newish car, then sell it for £5k after 2 years. So, in two years, they lost ten grand on a car that didn't stir their souls. At least if I use mine more, I'll enjoy what I have right now.

I conclude that you all think that there's no point in pampering it and that it should earn its keep and I agree.

Drive it whenever and as often as possible.If you want something to look at buy a Ferrari.

The more you drive it the better. The factory built it, and it was designed, to be be driven.
If you don't get the usage out of it, you are just saving it for some one else.

Make the most of whatever you have when you can.
You are a long time dead, so make the most of it.
If you want to be financially sensible, why did you buy it? How much is a grin worth?

Standard G50 box, no LSD, standard clutch, approx. 120,000 miles (60,000 after mods).

The big advantage is that it is not turbocharged, just supercharged, so there is no sudden power hike, and, if you drive below about 3000 rpm (fairly normal town driving, in my case), then there is no extra power with which to contend.
 
Bought my sc in December. Just been having the same dilema. I have just spent £700 on bodywork waxoil etc. You guys have just given me the confidence to go out. For some reason i think that if i take it out in any sort of winter weather that it will all of a sudden fall apart and i'll find nothing but a pile of rust on the garage floor. It's true why do us 911 owners think like that. Is it because we have all been brainwashed into thinking they are that delicate. From now on i will be out enjoying

I think that this forum indicates that not all of us do !

It's just a car, when all is said and done.

And by the way, mine still doesn't have any rust that I can see.
 
Oh i agree with you. Maybe it's just me. But my mate at work who has an SC is the same. Must shake this paranoia off!! Do you do much in the way of cleaning underneath and the arches etc?

Get out there and drive the beast!
I drive my cab. on a daily basis all year round. Covered 18,500 kms last year in Belgium/France and Germany without a hitch.
In Wintertime I do clean down the underside, wheel arches etc., on a weekly basis to remove salt/grime etc.,
The more you drive your 3,2 the more you will appreiate it. There's no point in metrely admiring it in the garage!
