baffled and depressed

during a recent visit to my local indie to get my hood fixed, the mechanic noticed a rattling sound from under the car which has been identified as a loose or broken baffle within the central muffler. Crispin at Oaktree informs me that this may break loose and cause more damage and should be replaced. The central muffler on the 968, he tells me, comes as a single unit, rear muffler + central muffler (part no 944.111.041.11) and costs (new) about..wait for it... £1150 + VAT + fitting. !!!!!
Anyone know where I can source one cheaper?

Tim

Look on the 'other' site www.porsche968uk.co.uk, there has been quite a lot of threads on aftermarket s/steel exhausts. Prices seem to be around the £600 mark for a full cat back system. Also if I remember correctly Porscheshop in Brum show one on their web site, that should do the job.

Good luck

ps as for a damaged muffler causing 'more damage', seems odd to me -- unless the mechanic is worried about it actually blocking all the exhaust flow -- seems unlikely though

Hi

I feel that you may be getting the wrong information or just plain ripped off.

Over on the 968UK forum there has been much discussion about exhausts and some members have brought comeplete CAT back systems for £500.00 or less.

Have a look at all the threads in this section

Depending on your budget this could be a good opportunity to fit a stainless system to your car. I guess it depends on what you are looking for but my car has a decat fitted to the standard system and the sound is much better.

I got mine fitted by a company in Walsall called MIJ, have a look on the 968 forum because he has given us some better prices for complete systems.

One of the members has a full CAT back system from essential styling and he is very happy with it. It has even increased the power slightly.

Good luck

thanks for that, one and all. sound advice as always. ESS will do a full stainless steel system for £350+VAT, 25yr guarantee. given that the porsche part is 4 figures its what I belived is nowadays called a "no brainer".
crispin at oaktree garage was a bit worried about the increase in noise levels "driving me nuts" (its my daily drive, not a weekend toy, and I wouldnt normally have wanted a loud exhaust) but ESS tell me its not that much louder, just "more throaty".

so thats about £800 saved. well done chaps

At the risk of boring my friends from "the other forum" to death, Tim....do you mind if I ask how you are getting on with your car as a daily driver? What sort of commute do you do? I am considering using my low-mile garage queen as a daily driver in future, but opinion (mine and others) seems divided on whether this is a wise move or not...

I can't see why driving your 968 each day could be an unwise move. they are after all built to be driven. I've had no problems whatsoever. been using the 968 as a daily drive for 8 months and a 944 for 5 yrs before that. Ok so the 968 rear seats are small, but I manage to transport a 12yr and 10yr for the school drive, plus or minus one friend as needed. the most ive transported is 3 children, one 1/4 size cello, 1 saxaphone, 1 clarinet, 2 games kits, 2 school bags, my gym bag & briefcase. took some planning, but no more so than packing the holiday suitcases. I dont do huge miles, all small town/semirural commute, about 8-9K per annum, so the wear is proportionately higher than if I was hooning down the motorway each day. so far so good, both cars have been completely reliable (bar the stuck down hood I had for a week last fortnight!).
downsides? well, the clutch is still relatively heavy in traffic and the mileage aint great, even with optimax. But its cool in summer, warm in winter, and a joy on the open road. In fact, driving the 968 each day makes me so happy I cannot imagine why I (or anyone else) would ever choose different.

Firstly, when I had my 968 I had a SS sports exhaust fitted. Made it throatier as the OEM sound is pathetic, more akin to a demented lawnmower[:D] If you are using as a daily driver it will not be noticable, probably make it a much more enjoyable experience. I would then question whether this garage should be trusted with your car as that is downright daylight robbery what they were trying to charge you.

David,

The car will be much better used on a more frequent basis and you will enjoy life more[:D] If you are trying to protect its value, you may find that in the long term you have missed out on using your car as prices are not going to go any higher and if you look at the moment at S2 values have started to plummet. I honestly cannot see the premium on the 968 continue especially after the release of the Cayman which will further depress Boxster values which will have a knock on effect on the 968. MAny people nowadays are beginning to look to the S2 and upgrading it as 968 prices have jumped and there is not a lot between the two cars to start with

David, I drove my 968CS the first year I got it for about 15k miles. It was fine (after Hartech had sorted it) never let me down and returned 26mpg on Optimax and mixed driving(tank fill check).

I did have a pair of fab comfort Recaro's in it instead of the race type which made it a lot easier to live with and stopped our atrocious roads getting to my dodgy spine[]It also had factory aircon which was nice.

Hartech also set up the alignment which stopped the rear end coming round too easily.[]I thought it was me getting back into rear wheel drive after years of Audi's but not so.

The clutch used to do that funny stopping down thing about once every couple of months but then went away? Part of it's character [:D]
It used to make me smile a lot and others too[;)] and it never really got a lot of aggro on the road like the Boxster does.[]
When I sold it the new owner (shoestring7 on this forum) we went for a drive and not having driven it for a while it felt great[8D]
Having gotten used to the Boxster and finding the handling limits thats good fun as well but differently.
The tyres lasted well also - cos its light I suppose.
Get out on the road chap you know it makes sense[:D]

Thanks Tim, and sorry for the thread hijack. It only needs to transport me really, but my other half will use it some days so we will have to find a way of getting a puschair in (without risking bootlip paintwork![][8|]). I will probably do around 10k per annum, which is a significant rise on the 5k per year I have done on average in it (all long journeys) and the err....2k I have done in it since last summer...[:)]

William, I'm not so concerned about its value crashing due to extra miles - at 44k it is worth maybe just £1k more as a private sale than one with twice that mileage - people buy these cars on condition as we know. Dealers smack a huge premium on low milers, but only when selling, not when buying off you! Interesting what you say about prices - I think they are better than they have been in maybe two years right now. I keep thinking they should fall, but the Boxster effect has had little influence yet in my opinion. Of course, they will drop, but I have lost £2.5k on mine in 2.5 years - I see that trend continuing overall. I did have a sale more or less agreed on mine recently, for £15k but I decided to hang on to it, reasoning that even putting 10k miles on it over the next year, as long as it is in the same condition, I will probably still get north of £14k for it next summer. Maybe wishful thinking, we will see[8D]

David, thanks for your encouragement. I am really looking forward to using it more - thats the reason I decided I am going to hang on to it for now. I have hardly driven it over the last year (new baby coupled with working away) but I will have plenty of time to attend events over this summer - I couldn't face the summer without the Porsche!

Cheers,
Dave

I would then question whether this garage should be trusted with your car as that is downright daylight robbery what they were trying to charge you.

I agree the prices were insane, but I'd have to defend the garage, who have always done well by me. what they were quoting was the price for a porsche approved replacement, and Ive checked this since - they are right. Fitting/labour was extra! Crispin didnt offer me a sports exhaust because I suspect he doesnt much approve of them - thinks they are too loud for daily drivers. ESS assure me theirs is tasteful rather than boy-racer blaring.

Referring to a previous thread of mine, Oaktree fixed my cab hood for 3 hours labour at £50/hr whereas the OPC quoted two full days labour at £85+VAT ie four figures (!!)
