BAFFLING ??

I think it is a separate little fan to waft air over the cabin temperature sensor...

Hi Guys, I have a 1989 944 lux, only just recently ive noticed that when the key is switched on in the ignition I can hear a whirring noise from behind the dash, ive checked the heater controls & I get all four positions on the switch & all four different fan speeds as normal, but when the switch is in the off position I can still hear the whirring & I can still feel air being blown slightly from the vents, is this normal ?? cheers, Tony

Thanks guys, never noticed it before & ive had the car two years !! LOL, its a bit odd though that they have built that into the car ???

From memory it was because the car didn't have any natural ventilation, so the slow fan feature was included to keep the air fresh.

That's even more baffling then because it only works when the key is in, so I would imagine you would be shortly driving afterwards & then there would be plenty of ventilation anyway ??? LOL i'll just add this to the other little quirks of the 944 design team think tank !

There is a halfway-off position on the key you can find, where the fan stops, but the radio is still on. It's incredibly annoying to have a while to wait in the car and the fan running the whole time!

I think the idea initially was that the vents in the boot connect to the vent in the door pillar internally and when the door is shut I guess it was assumed that the air would be drawn out into the lowpressure area created by the air moving past the door shuts. In practise the depression is insufficient at low speed so the fan was wired to be permanently on at a slow speed. Why would there be vents in the front of the luggage compartment and a vents in the door pillars? It isn't there just for the purpose of shoving your mobile in there to see how rotten the cills are

I'm surprised you're surprised by this. It is a fairly common feature on cars. Out of my last 6 cars, the VW Golf is the only one that doesn't do this. Perhaps the difference is that being rather old your 944 fan has gotten a little noisier and thus is more noticeable.

Take the key out of the ignition?
Then you wouldn't be able to listen to the radio
Unless you get a Becker or Blaupunkt Radio which can be turned on for an hour without no ignition supply. However, this may restrict your CD player choices admittedly [:D].

Well blow me. I've only been wondering what that slightly annoying whirring noise was with everything switched off. Guess I'll learn to live with it (assume replacing the fan won't change anything) [:D]

Plus you may fall asleep listening to the Archers! and then wish you had the fan noise to keep you awake!! [:D][:D]
