Hi guys, have purchased a 944 NA 2.5 for a bit of track use . I have little experience in this engine. has anyone tried removing the balancer shafts to increase power? any other usefull tips are welcome in tuning this motor,

cheers

I believe that you can remove the balance shaft belt to liberate 3-4 horses but I think the shafts themselves remain in place. I'd take a good look at your engine mounts though as that extra vibration will be transmitted straight to them.

I hear the extra vibration isn't too hot on the crank either, but this could be old wives' tales.

leave alone it's not worth the possible extra bhp. The 944 engine is a masterpeice and those balance shafts are there for a reason , our cars are over 20 years old and if they had no balance shafts most of our engines would need replacing by now plus I've read that removing them can cause the oil pickup pipe to break at a certain rpm due to resonating from the frequency generated.

Pete is right. The downsides don't make up for the upsides. The main reason why they are removed is for weight saving anyway, rather than power increase. You'd get away with it on a race car where the engine is rebuilt regularly, but what's the point for such little and un-noticeable gain?

Saying that my old Lux had its balance shafts and belts in place and the oil pick up still cracked! Bye bye engine.
Better off ripping a bit more weight out from the body.

I would tend to agree with all the posters so far. There are cannier ways to increase BHP. If however you are still determined to do it I believe Lynsey Racing supply a kit for complete removal. The key is in the name though. They prepare racing 944s!!!

Thanks guys, looks like they will stay.

am looking at the usual porting and polishing, balancing and lightening, any other easy mods?

We are looking at shoestring level racing this year so trying to keep the cost down in year 1.

If anyone wants any interior trim, I am loking at selling, its the back/darkbrown pisntripe and its all there no wear at all. The cars onyl doen aboout 48k in its life according to all the records that came with it.

The tops fo the rear seats are a little faded but sure that they can be redyed/painted black again.

Door cards are ok, although the previous owner has use sealant around the speakers. Rear boot carpet and spare are all in good nick.

Will be looking for a poly rear hatch at some point, and poss bonnet and doors in GRP maybe.

Thanks again
