Ballast resistor for blower motor

Hi guys, Been working on my 944 for a month now. Next on the list is to get the blower fan working.

Anyway, there is a melted hole on the blower fan intake cover just above the resistor so I guess this was the problem. I have looked around and this part is quite expensive and really not too keen on getting a second hand one if it's just going to fail on me again and melt more than just the cover next time it fails.

Was wondering if anyone has attempted to modify the control system

So you just need a ground connection and a direct 12v feed. Probably better fan speed control and whatnot.

Hi Lee, worst case it might be that the resistor got hot and melted because the fan motor has shorted.................

Best case, just get someone to measure the resistance and buy & install a bigger wattage resistor of the same ohmic value, it will disperse the heat better.

I assume the resistor is in the cold airstream to keep it cool, and for some reason the airflow was restricted?

That is a possible case scenario. However these resistors fail over time I guess and that's how they go. I've read that other owners also ended up with a melted hole.

I have bought a replacement motor just in case and checked the loom and it all seems to be in good condition. Except for the melted switch which I bought a replacement for (VW part yay!)

Do you have any suggestions on where to buy a replacement resistor? I have a list of what amps and voltages are to be expected for each fan setting.

Has anyone found a source of resistors of the correct wattage to allow the resistor pack to be refurbished?

I strongly suspect that the cost of the component parts is a lot less than the £160 the OPC last quoted me for a new pack.

yep, don't really need to pay them £160 for what is just a bunch of wires and a resistor. Plus it's good to figure it out now as it will surely help a lot of people when their fan resistors decide to blow up.
