i have owned two 996 carreras one being a c4 and my latest being my dream car the 996 c4s, but i have had the same noise coming from the rear.
someone told me that this could be the air box banging, its not the boot lid, and the rear top mounts have no play......
its mainly when going over dips in the road not so much on speed bumps or similar. any one had the same ????

Does it sound like the mechanics of the car or something loose?

On a track day last year I had a sound start that sounded like something loose, like the boot lid, exhaust or shocks etc.

As the day progressed it got worse and sounded worse when cornering or going over a bump etc.

Took it into OPC and it was the rear diff. New 'box/diff under warranty.

Hope its not that for you [;)]

Hmmm....[&:] that's EXACTLY what mine sounds like... thought it could be the boot lid or spoiler being loose...

Will try and diagnose more carefully next time I drive it.

well been to opc and looks like im having rear anti roll bars done. hope this sorts it. part of me agrees maybe some banging
is down to rear spoiler seems to not be as bad when i raise it. mmmmm but still warranty job. we all have something that gets us moaning but thats just petrol heads will we ever just drive the things and be done,....... i dont think so some how. our babys just have to be right no matter how old.

well ive had the rear anti roll bar drop links done......
and still getting this bang at the back. ive now put it down to air box and oil filler pipe knockin. thats all i can.
also how good is this clay everyones using!

I have also been suffering from this & changing the drop links & cleaning up the ARB bushes didn't help, so today I decided to get to the bottom of what's causing it.

In my case, it turned out to be the lack of 2 rubber grommets that locate the bottom of the airbox to the body. Upon closer inspection, they had obviously fallen out some time ago & were both visible, lodged down near the pulleys. Re-inserting them into the body & being very careful when refitting the lower half of the airbox seems to have kept them in place & all trace of banging has been banished! Costs about 20 minutes of time and no money - bargain [:)]

Tip: While you've got it that far apart, it's also well worth giving the throttle-body a good clean - mine had a load of sticky black gunk inside.
