Basic advice for 924 newbie

Hi Paul & all!

First forum entry here from me - Mark, who has proudly joined Porsche ownership with my 924 purchased June of last year. No excuses for not saying 'hello'! a lot sooner, so sorry for that!

Firstly, i love this car! Secondly, i love this car!!

However, I do have a couple of rather basic/standard questions, so i apologise if this is stuff that has been covered previously.

During rainy periods, there is always a damp patch in the rear hatch on the near side where the carpet lifts to allow access to the 'wine compartment!' I have had Specialist Cars of Malton check this out twice to identify & rectify the cause, but despite several brave efforts, the water is still getting in. The seal which runs around the rear windscreen has been replaced in addition to rubber sealant being added around the spoiler. Any ideas??

Finally, as I am not too technically minded in terms of car maintainance and have limited space in which to work, I would still like to make savings where possible;

For a standard 'service', where should I look to purchase items, such as;

Oil filter
Engine Oil (what type & grade)
Plugs & Points.
Coolant (when needed)
Brake fluid (when needed)

And which brands/make should I go for?

Are the standard auto outlets okay? (cringe)

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi Mark,

Drop the rear seats and get someone to lie in the boot whilst you pour water on the glass, they should be able to see roughly where it gets in or is traveling from to eventually drip.

Have you checked the drain pipe that connects to the rear flap lock and the gasket which fits in it? I had a similar leak many years ago, it was a split drain pipe !

I think the oil filter from Porsche has a non return valve installed to stop the oil draining out of it, some of the generic ones may not have this. Its p/n 931 107 701 00 and probably the only thing i would get from the dealer, oh and a few sump plug washers !

Apart from that, everything else from ya local Halfords !!

Being an old car i would stay away from a fully synthetic oil if the engine is not used to having it in, Synth has a habit of finding the smallest gap and leaking through :(
A semi synthectic or dino oil should be ok around 15W40 grade.

If you have any service history then stick with the oil previously used.

HTH

This is an old favourite.
There is drain pipe that runs (each side) through that area from the sun roof and if that gets blocked / detached a build up of water occures in the area you mention. If left unattended it leads to seroius rusting. As a matter of fact that is one of the areas that I tell every prospective buyer to check.
Usual remedy for a blocked pipe is to straighten out a wire coat hanger and clear it CAREFULLY with that. A detached pipe is an altogether different problem. I seem to recall that Rob Gurney, the previous Register Secretary covered this in an article in P/P a couple of years ago.

Phil & Geoff,

Thanks very much for taking the time to reply i appreciate it.

Phil - I will try to convince my other half to get wet, although I fear she may meet my request with some suspicion!

That's also good advice regarding service items and Oil. My service company used Mobile 1 semi-syn 15W-50 on last service.

Geoff - Luckily the area you mentioned which is prone to rust does not seem to have suffered from water expose to any extent thus far, so I will now address this with some urgency to ensure it stays that way.

Thanks again.
Mark & MWW.
