Basic service

Got a few quid to spend next week (belts, chain, front discs, front pads and rear shoes). It also needs a service but to save a few quid i'm gonna do the basics myself - and treat it to a proper service when funds allow!

I will obviously be attending spark-plugs, air filter, oil and filter. Do we replace the fuel filter, gearbox oil, diff oil? Anything else?

Ta!!

Fuel filter should be every 2 years, gearbox oil every 4

Don't forget coolant and brake fluid should be every 2 years too

Cheers. Will probably do all this as I'm not sure when they were last attended! Any idea of the oil capacity?

Gearbox oil benefits from an annual or bi-annual change on my S2. More often than once every four, for sure.

A good flushing additive before you remove the old oil keeps the lifters nice and quiet.

Plus all the other bits. Inspect CV boots, steering rack gaitors, wheel arches, brakes (bads and disks), remove flints from tyres, clean any junk from around the body (front arches, scuttle panel, around the boot aperture), clean and lubricate hinges and locks, refill windscreen squirt and clean washer jets, check lightbulbs ...

It'll take you all day. Remember to finish with a cold beer.

Mmm. Beer...

What about dizzy cap and rotor arm. Inspection and reuse if looks nice, or replace always?

IIRC the two are about £70 together. I'd got for inspection [:D]

Same for the ignition leads, run the engine in the dark and look for sparks.

Ordering my plugs tomorrow (gap fof S2 anyone?), already recieved my oil flushing additive (Shell), will check dizzy cap and rotor arm, I have a spare oil filter (will need to check if it's correct one).

What oil should I go for? We have quite a bit of oil from our deep-fat-fryer. Will that be ok?

Also gear-box oil. Quantity and varient?

I'm gonna save a few quid here I reckon - especially if I use my existing deep-fryer oil. I will obviously seive all the old chips out...

Trev,

Plugs: Bosch WR5DC+. Use from the packet - gap is correct.

Oil: Lots of debate on here. See other threads. (I use 10W40 semi-synth from GM. The debate about other options is fierce)

Gear oil: Lots of debate on this one too. See other threads. Takes about a litre or so. (I use the porsche-spec one from GM. The debate about other options is also fierce)

Keep that deep-fat-fryer oil for squirting into the cills. It will make for good rust prevention.

Oli.
