Batter/Generator Warning

stomper

Hi, I've been prompted to cross post this from the 997 forum

This error came up on the dash last Monday, the car carried on working for a while but slowly things stopped working and eventually I had to pull over.

The very helpful AA person was convinced it was the alternator, he put in a spare battery to help me get home and tested it with a DVM and he said there was no charge going into it.

I've been in contact with my local OPC and they can fit a new alternator for a very large amount of money, I've also been talking to my local Indi who can fit a reconditioned one for about 1/2 that.

The price I've seen on the web for recon units seems to be inline with what the Indi is proposing, but I've seen other posts elsewhere that talks about just replacing the regulator or diodes.

Any input appreciated

Thanks in advance

The regulator/diode pack can be replaced if that is the problem, which it often is. There is a DIY here with the part numbers:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-996-997-forum/408495-alternator-repair-regulator-replacement.html

The part is also available from Porsche, and IIRC someone on here actually got an OPC to do this. Maybe they could chime in if they come by.

Rod Naghar had a spare alternator a while ago, so it might also be worth contacting him to see if it is still available.......

Richard, thanks for the input. I'm reading the "How to" now.

Hi Richard

Many, many thanks for the link to the DIY page on changing the voltage regulator - it has saved me a fortune!

I had a non-charging alternator and after running through the diagnostics in Adrian Streather's Essential Companion and the DIY link it looked very much like the voltage regulator. So, I took the plunge and replaced the regulator and all is now well, in fact the car is running better than ever. The DIY guide is excellent, easy to follow with reassuring photo's.

Thanks again.

Simon
