Battery Advice.....

Hi,

I have a battery low charger connetced to car to keep battery charged. If I disconnect it the battery goes flat after 2 weeks approx.

Do I need a new battery ?

Which is the best batteru to get for 1996 911 993 Carerra S ?

Any members advice would be appreciated on this matter,

Ken Lawler

The best way to know if a new battery is required is to get it tested. However, having the battery discharge after two weeks of non use is not that unusual. I had exactly the same problem with my car and eventually it killed the battery completely. I got a replacement and continued to have the same problem until I got a battery maintainer which I keep connected to the car and have had no problems since.

Do you mean battery charger on low, or do you mean battery conditioner?
Constantly charging using a charger will likely kill the battery anyway.
A conditioner however will top it up and then stop, and only top it up again when it senses the battery needs it.

Interesting, I have also this problem, but thought it was due to the stupid alarm I had to have fitted! Conditioner does the trick though. However, I do not believe a car's battery should die after 2 weeks of non use! Is there another known fault?
Oh, I do know of one solution, USE IT MORE![;)]

Trackers appear to drain the battery quicker as well (as owners of later models who have returned from vacation to non-funtioning cars will confirm).
2 Weeks at airport parking? Not recommended...

Interesting to read to the "two weeks" comments.

Unfortunately I had to leave my car in my garage for 4 weeks one [warm] summer, and it fired first time when I next tried, no problems.

However, 4 weeks during the winter was different matter ..... !

This was a 2 year old battery.

Plug the battery into a Battery Conditioner when the car is not in use.
I noticed one on the Porscheshop stand last Sunday, that plugs from the mains into the Cigar lighter socket. There are a number of different makes on the market. But Don't get Conditioners confused with trickle chargers. Personally I have a solar panel on the garage roof that does an excellent job.

Good luck,
