I have a battery conditioner (optimate) which I intend to use on my 993. It would appear from a previous meesage that there will be little point in me obtaining a cigarette lighter connection as this will not work. I could not see from the thread that this was confirmed and wondered if anybody out there had managed to use the cigarette lighter to charge/maintain their battery.

Yes, the cigarette lighter can be rewired, but do you want it live all the time, when the engine is off ? OK for trickle chargers, but a downside if anything else gets connected.
Also, would using the cig. lighter mean that the cable would run through the door, which might make locking it a bit difficult ?
Mine connects to the battery, via a heavy duty connector, running over the 'smile', so that I can close the bonnet fully.

I have an Accumate, which is similar to Optimate.
I connect it, with the cables and connectors provided, directly to the battery, passing the wire through the bonnet which closes quite easily. I have a one way connector close to the battery so no problem with polarity when connecting/disconnecting and this works just fine. Just make sure the bonnet lid is fully closed otherwise the interior lights saty on.

You can leave the bonnet lid open while charging the battery without the light on; just switch the interior light off by pressing downn the bonnet catch. When you want to close the bonnet, just remember to pull the bonnet lever to "unclick" the latch before you close it!
