Battery Chargers/conditioners

I was following the earlier thread on Batteries and one post mentioned battery charger/conditioner which I was thinking about getting as my car sits for weeks at a time without turning a wheel due to overseas biz trips. My OPC tried to sell me one at about £85 but I suspect there are cheaper alternatives which are just as good. I have searched the interweb but got confused about just which one is best for the car but I should have known it would be better to come here first.

Anyone using one and if so what type is it, I would prefer to use the fag lighter rather than leads from the battery which would remove the need to lift the bonnet everytime I disengaged/engaged the device.

Thoughts or recommedations are most welcome

I use a trickle charger from Halfrauds, I think it was ~£28. It will charge a low battery, then just tops it up when needs be and switches offf when not needed. Clips directly to the battery. Does a great job.

Lovely thought Adrian, Just a slight hiccup though, my garage gets no light!! The thought also crossed my mind that there are mixed metaphors here: solar powered to charge up a 3.6 gas guzzling, ozone depleteing, vile carbon footprint the size of a small village monster car and foe of the eco warrior.

Nice touch! makes me want to do my bit!!!!!!!

There's always the trusty CTEK charger/conditioner range. You can get a fag lighter adapter too.
 
I love it when a mixed metaphor rears it's head!! I also love it when a plan comes together! There, I've said it!
 
I've been here and done this one. I bought mine from Hiene Geirike (I ride bikes too), its a trickle charger/booster and will sit and maintain your battery whilst you are away. It will detect whether you are connecting to a bike, car or jet ski and adjust its self according and give a digital report on your battery ie what it is currently doing with it and when charged its condition ie stong/weak and then automatically go into maintain mode. It comes with a mounting lead (leave it permanently mounted on the battery so you can plug straight in) and leads with clamps to connect to your terminals. It is made by Oxford and cost £40. It is as good as all the other trickle chargers on the market at a very reasonable cost. I have used mine on my car and bikes, faultless.

The connectors on the Oxford item allow you to close the bonnet. It also allows you to connect a permanet connection to the battery so it really is a "plug in" facility. This facility makes it perfect for motor bikes, you can hook up and tie wrap the connector to the frame, save all the seat off, battery access faff. Same goes for the car, really user friendly.

Richard, my backups are working fine!

Just route the lead out of the top of the bonnet - out by the wipers.
You can then close and lock the car as normal.
