Battery charging - Forum virgin needs help!

Hi all.

Any help with this would be much appreciated. I returned to my 1995 Tiptronic, after a spell of about a month with no driving, to find that my remote (un)locking didn't work. After letting myself in manually, I found that all the electrics weren't functioning and realised I had a problem. I recalled that the batteries on 993's needed regular use to keep them happy so thought a simple charge would sort the job.

When I attached my charger, however, juice wasn't flowing into the battery. I tested my charger on another car and it worked fine.

My questions are; is it likely that the flat battery is the cause of my remote locking not working? (I know this may seem a daft question...) and is there something I need to do to enable a charger to work on my battery?

Other than that I've had my 993 for over 6 months now and am LOVING IT!! Definitely the right choice!

Cheers,

I'm afraid you're going to need a new battery.[:(] Just to be sure arrange to have it tested at your local garage.

I had a similar problem on another car a few months ago and bought a new battery charger because the one in use wasn't charging. The new one didn't charge either and I took it back to the retailer. He explained (and it may be bull but I never picked up much electrical theory at school to test it) that some of the newer chargers would not charge a battery that was completely flat and needed some charge left in order to trigger the charger into providing a charge. Try an old charger (if you have one) before you start buying new batteries.

Thanks chaps. I'll give an older charger a go and if I still see no results then a new battery it is. If it is a new battery, are there any particular brands you've found best for 993's?

The CTEK battery conditioner seems to tick all the right boxes....just got mine after a recommed from here...has all the features...no need to disconnect the battery and you can leave it connected and plugged in...keeps the battery top line....so far so good

Thanks for the info, I was actually wondering if there are any battery brands to go for. Not chargers. Any ideas, or will a Bosch/Varta standard battery do the trick??

Hi,

The general consensus appears to be to get a Bosch battery. I don't think you'll go far wrong with a Varta. The prices do appear to vary significantly. You can get good deals from German and Swedish, Eurocarparts and I understand from Costco.

Also, if you have breakdown cover it's worth calling them out as they will be able to confirm the condition of your old battery and also jump start your car.

Thanks a lot. You've all been a great help. I'll return and post if further problems continue,

Cheers
