Battery Charging Voltage

After a couple of weeks of short trips (3-5 miles) the car refused to turn over. No problem - started it with jump leads. However before this point the Voltmeter used to show charging rates of between 13.5 and 13.8V. Since however it now charges between 13.8 and 14.2. Is this indicative of a failing battery or the alternator/diode pack beginning to fail?

Usually if the voltage regulator is starting to fail, it starts off at 14v then gradually drops over a few miles to 12.5v or below. It sounds like the battery may be weak and the alternator is trying to recharge it after starting hence the slightly higher charging voltage.

It is normal to see a higher voltage if the battery is low - as it reaches full charge you would expect to see the voltage reduce to between 13v and 14v, so it sounds as though all is OK to me. See what it does next time out once your battery is fully charged.

Many thenks for both answers. After a few longer trips the voltmeter starts at about 13.9 then drops to around 13.6 after a few miles so I guess everything is OK. However will monitor. Battery is over 2 years old - it was on the car when I bought it and there is no date on the battery. Many thanks again.[:)]
