Battery charging

Hi, just got a ctek battery charger and wondering if I need to disconnect the negative lead on the battery before I use it to trickle charge?

I have connected the semi-permanent cable to our battery (bolts on to the car battery leads) and connect it up with both car positive and negative leads still attached.

HTH.

I've been looking at this and will probably go for the option that uses the cigarette lighter for charging assuming, of course, the cigarette lighter is permanently live once the ignition key is removed.

Hi Toby
All mk 2s should be live as are some late Mk1s, but most mk1s are only live with ignition on, cannot give an exact date of the change.

Thanks Andy
I'll find out when I pick my car up on Wednesday.
It was first registered on 3/2/2001 so it may well be a live ignition off version

Fingers crossed you have a live one. I use the Ctek through my lighter socket during the winter months and trail the lead out the bottom of the door. I was concerned at first that the cable might be damaged doing it that way but the rubber door seal allows plenty of room.

Hi all,
I have a 1998 mk1 carrera which I keep covered under a carcoon over the winter.
The carcoon also has a trickle charger that I attach to the positive and negative terminals of my battery.
It maintains the battery really well through the winter months.
My car is not permanently live so the cigarette lighter option was a non runner.
Regards
Gerry
