Battery Conditioner Question!

Following my 'Battery' thread, I, as reccomended have gotten a battery conditioner.

I actually got a genuine Porsche 'charge-o-mat' from a friend, only, there are no instructions.

It is the mains plug that fits in the cigarette lighter socket - However, my question is, do i just plug it in and leave it?

Do i put down a window to get it plugged in? How long can i leave it? Are there any things I should be aware of?

Cheers [:)]

Hi,

Yep you just plug it into the cigerette lighter socket, lock the car and walk away.

The socket is live all the time so it will accept the charge with the car locked.

I leave mine on all the time and feeb the cable through the door and just close the door. It doesn't appear to cause any damage to the cable.

If you feel along the bottom of the door door seal, you should find a small cutaway in the seal. This is for routing the cable through to avoid creasing the seal.

You should also check to make sure your lighter socket remains live with the ignition key removed. By all accounts, some do - some don't.

Is there a LED somewhere on the charger to indicate charging is active ? Charging will only be active when it's plugged in and the circuit is complete i.e all the way to the battery.

Otherwise remove the key and just press in the cig lighter, if it doesn't heat up and pop out, your socket goes off with the ignition (provided the cig lighter element is ok)

oh bugger, just checked at there is no power to the ciggie lighter when the ignition is off...

does that mean it wont work?[:(]

My 2000 C4 is the same - only live when ignition is sw on.

You'll need to connect the unit directly to the battery terminals in some way.

I purchased the aforementioned CTEK 3600 (same as the Porsche one, but much cheaper!) and it comes with the leads ready for this type of connection.

They're not difficult to make up yourself though...bit of cable and some crimp terminals...

If your battery is reasonably well charged there shouldn't be a problem. If it is flat, however, and you switch on the ignition with the charger connected, the load of the energised devices (fuel pump, electronics, etc) may blow the fuse in the charger.
