The car is going to be stored oustide for about 14 weeks and have been advised by most to connect Battery Conditioner......anyone got any good recommends/suppliers?

Many thanks

Be careful that they don't try and sell you a trickle charger rather than a conditioner.

Optimate is probably one of the best ones around (about £40). can be wired directly to the battery terminals and has an inline connector so easily disconnected when not required.
Check this thread 'Setting up battery charger - help required ' in the 996 section.

Machine Mart / Halfords do ones which some people use of this forum, always seem to be good reports (about £10) if memory serves me correctly

Hi day1zero,
Peter Morgan journalist and engineer who writes for 911 Porsche World sells his books and the best battery conditioner available, ie same as Porsche sell but using the manufacturer's brand name - Certek, model Multi XS 3600. I have two and swear by them. Peter Morgan's web site is; www.pmmbooks.com

Have used the Multi XS 3600 for the last 3 years now, it's excellent, by far the best one I've had and they are approved for outdoor use.

I can vouch for the Porsche one, although it probably has a premium price.

However, does anyone know if the solar trickle chargers are any good?

I ask because I have farm vehicles that get left for weeks at a time where there is no mains power.

Oliver,
Not sure how waterproof the solar chargers are although putting them in clear plastic bags that can be sealed shouldn't effect their performance.
One of the major drawbacks to using them in this country is that they need sunshine to operate at their best.[:)]
Cheers,

I got my Ctek 800 from Ebay it was cheaper than the shops and has worked brilliantly over the winter. After two week of not running the battery of my 1994 993 would struggle, but now it fires with no hesitation.

Oliver,

I don't think the solar charger work on our cars. They sit on the dashboard or stick to the window with suckers, so weather isn't a problem. As I understand it, we cannot use them as they connect through the cigarette lighter, and as our lighter is not active when the ignition is off, there is no circuit to allow the battery to charge. I'm happy to be proved wrong, as I would like to use one of these but this is what I was told.

I suppose you can connect it straight to the battery, but that would involve poking wires through the firewall and having a permanent connection to the battery, or at least having to disconnect it every time you drive the car.

The 'solar' system is intended for some farm vehicles, and I would connect directly to the battery with crocodile clips, just to keep some juice in the system.

Now I am not sure whether this is a red herring or not, but...

Connected my battery charger the other day (via the cigarette lighter) and noticed that when connected with the ignition off it did nothing (which we would expect), when connected with the ignition on it started charging (again which we would expect), but here's the odd one: connected with the ignition on then turned the ignition off and the charger indicator lights still showed it as charging [&:]

To be honest I cannot remember why I turned the ignition off.

I have not checked yet to see whether it was actually charging or whether the charger was just being a bit 'dim' and not really telling it straight. Only thing I can think is that there is perhaps a relay in the circuit (or something else - electrical priniciples was never my strong point) which holds the connection open if there is a voltage/current at the cigarette ligher, but this seems rather unlikely.

I dare say I will investigate more when I have a chance because it will save adding a connector direct to the battery.

It probaly turns it off after a while - the idea being that it won't drain the battery if you've left an accessory plugged in for a week.

CTEK 3600 and 7000 model both work very well.

bought mine from Hamilton Classics (do a google search) who were the best price i found at the time

all the best
