Battery Conditioner

Hi, I have a 21MY Macan Turbo but don't do many miles so am considering getting a battery conditioner. I have had a 'low battery' warning come on once. Can anybody recommend a good one, and can I connect through the cigarette lighter or must I go straight to the battery. According to the handbook the cigarette lighter will power items for up to 30 mins with the ignition off, but then switches off. There is no reference that I can see to charging the car through the cigarette lighter.

Some models have "smarts" on the cigarette socket - if it sees "input" within a period of time it keeps the socket live - but I don't know specifically about the macan. If you end up connecting to the battery - then you should goto batttery positive, and then to a convenient chassis / earth point rather than direct to negative. The car will have a battery monitor the senses what goes in and out of the battery - this drives the "numbers" behind stop/start and smart (temp, state of charge, age of battery, learned characteristics) charge parameters. If you charge / condition the battery directly you bypass this and the "numbers" the car understands don't match the reality.

*There is a negative charging post within the engine compartment to attach the negative crocodile clip.

Way back in 2014, I did an article on Ctek chargers you can find it here. The equipment has been updated since then, but you can obtain details on all the latest kit by clicking here Ctek.

There's an all purpose unit (4 in 1) called the Ctek CS FREE and this would probably be the most useful, provided it's within your budget (a shade under £200).

Here's an instructive video

As regards using the cabin power socket, plug the charger in, but not switched on. Turn the ignition on so all the dash lights come up (i.e. key present), switch on the charger wait a minute, then turn off the ignition. Hopefully this will overcome auto-disconnect. If not then you'll be stuck with engine compartment charging.

Regards,

Clive
