battery failed on car

went to start the car up on the weekend ,and the battery was flat looks like after 5 years and 1 month the porsche battery has given up ,i only use the car on the weekend and sunny days in the week, the car has never been conected to a charger/ conditoner since i have owned it due to the garage being away from the house(no electric). after looking on the forum i decided to go for a bosch replacement, as a porsche one only has a 2year warranty and was more expensive, looked around local motorfactors etc and online,got one from halfords in the end a bosch hsb096 for £127 with a 5 year warranty(780a 77ah)
 
5 years 1 month is very impressive if you've never used a conditioner - and even more so if it goes the whole week without use. I went for a Bosch Silver from Euro Car Parts and bought a CTek conditioner to go with it.

Yep, good move, the Halfords "no questions asked" 5 year warranty seems a no brainer.
 
Unless you have the Porsche Warranty in which case a non-Porsche battery voids the warranty.

Isn't it about time the club raised this with Porsche UK?

When a cheaper alternative battery of good brand and quality, German too with 5 year warranty is available in the general motoring stores Porsche should at least offer it as an option and allow it under warranty.

Recently I bought a Porsche Battery over the parts counter to keep the warranty operating or I would have gone for the Bosch although my Porsche Battery has done 4 1/2 years it would have done more if I had not started to treat it as a weekend car this past winter, or if I'd used a conditioner from what I've heard of them.



 
After a warranty renewal inspection in late November 2008, I was told by the OPC that the 4-year old battery (presumably the original factory fitted one) was shot, with one-cell down (not that I had noticed). As the warranty renewal requires a Porsche part is used, a new (Porsche / Moll Kamina 580 42) battery was fitted. At the time I was miffed but not especially upset as I expected to see at least 5 years of use.

Fast forward to last month, two days after a major service as it happens, the alarm was triggering intermittently and the electrics were going haywire whenever the car was unlocked. It wouldn't turn over when started (just triggered the alarm) so I checked the battery which I was surprised to see was reading just 7V. I charged it overnight and all of the next day but the voltage wouldn't get beyond 10v. Cue new battery - after just 2 years and 5 months!

As the car is under a Porsche warranty I was forced to shell out another £195 on a like-for-like replacement. Once the new battery was installed, I checked to see if there were any excessive current drains - and there weren't. The alternator was chucking out 14.45V when the engine was running, which is normal.

I'm very careful to check electrolyte levels from time to time and test the SG before the winter And, whenever the car is parked up for more than a couple of days, I connect up a mains-powered conditioner or a solar-powered maintainer, so I'm sure the problem wasn't caused by neglect. Other vehicles in the fleet have a 6 year-old Bosch (BMW), a 5 year-old Exide (Land Rover) and a 9 year-old Yuasa (Honda) fitted , all still going strong.

The conclusion is that Porsche's quality control standards aren't up to much, particularly when it comes to batteries. Expect between 2 and 4 years from a Porsche/Moll-branded battery at £195. Expect double the life from batteries costing half as much.

It amuses me to think how Porsche think they'll manage with hybrid / electric cars [:D]
 
Now you're giving me doubts of the maintainers which many seem to rave about, I haven't got one but have been looking into getting one but the Porsche batteries are overpriced and of poor quality.
 
Recently had to have my wifes car battery replaced on a 2006 car. Only after I had driven to the Porche garage did I find out that their price for fitting a new battery was £247. Their excuse was that lots of things needed to be reset after the battery was disconnected. Reluctantly agreed to have it replaced there as I could not restart it without their assistance anyway. Still think I was fleeced.
 
As it has often been said the Moll/Porsche Batteries a are overpriced and poor quality, if they offered a Bosch alternative it would probably be overpriced from Porsche but we would have more confidence in them.
 
On the 986 it's a 10 minute job to swap batteries and that includes cleaning the battery tray. You just need to make sure the ignition key is in the second position before disconnecting the battery. After installing, there's no re-setting or re-coding involved (on late 986 versions at least). Seems odd that anything should need re-setting on a 987.
