Battery / generator warning

Hi,

Having had 'Battery / generator' warning light come on whilst out a couple of days ago, I first recharged battery and then, with warning light still on, fitted a new one. And light is still on. (Whilst I might have spent a few quid a little earlier than needed, this has more than been made up for by the great bicep exercise - light aren't they?). Car is 5 next month, 26K on clock and on original Moll battery.

So I guess we're looking at warning light malfunction or generator problem. Anyone been down same road and, if so, what I might be looking at if I need a new generator fitted?

Cheers,

Mike.

Mike,

After 4.5yrs trouble free, I decided to ask GTOne about the state of my battery when it was in having a short shift fitted. It turned out to only be holding about 50% charge. So had a new one fitted. Incidently it was a Varta 80Ahr unit.

Maybe after 5 years the thing is just struggling now?

...thanks, Andrew. As mentioned, have just put a new battery in (Bosch S5010) - in line with your comments, I was guessing that 5 years was a fairly good innings given that car (generally) gets shortish journeys only. So I wasn't too chuffed to see warning light back on after replacement!

I also see that Handbook recommends that you stop driving when this warning appears - hence my concern that I may be looking at something related to the generator.

Cheers,
Mike.

Sounds like the alternator has failed, assuming the drive belt is still there! Just like other cars it's usually just the diode pack which can be replaced quite cheaply, but first you have to get the alternator off and then put it back, which is why most people just replace them. Depends on whether you use your car daily, hassle factor etc.
