battery in boot?

I know 'early' cars had their battery in the boot, presumably they had a very long +ve lead?

Has anyone got a long +ve lead lying around they don't want? Or a long length of insulated battery cable?

many thanks, Phil

I think you'll find early cars had the battery under the bonnet.

85.5 cars onward have it in the boot.

Must be a heck of a long cable as you say[:D]

I thought it was the other way round, but never mind.

Anyway, just had a thought - could I gett some cheap jump leads to make a cable out of? I can't see why not, but perhaps they're not rated for continuous use or something technical like that (electrics are not my strong point!) Obviously I wouldn't attach the lead with the jumbo croc clips - my electrics aren't that bad [:D] [:D]

You can find 200amp, 8mm multi-strand, 2.5 metre leads for not a lot on e-bay. would that do the job?

www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk and www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk sell good battery cable. Check the earths too. the standard "battery in the front" cars have two earth leads. one to body and one to engine. I'm not sure exactly how the battery in boot wiring goes to earth the engine.

Hi Phil, have you looked in www.rswww.com , that`s RS components. Tel 08457 201201. They`ll send you a CD catalogue with millions of really useful bits.

I think AWG4 is what's fitted from the factory.

You can get this from Maplin Electronics http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=6208&criteria=Shark%20Installation&doy=29m5- they sell it for ICE installation, and it's a damn site better quality than the stuff put in at the factory. It comes in Black and Red, and you buy it by the 1/2 metre, so fill your boot(s) so to speak[:D]

You may also want to invest in some quick release terminals while your there, as the orignals from the factory are captive, so can't be re-used.

Would it make sense to run an earth all the way from the battery to the engine?

BTW, it's for motorsport use. I'll be marshalling in a couple of weeks time so I think I'll grab a few minutes with the scrutineers when they've finished, just to check on anything else I need to consider.

Phil

Actually a really bad idea to run an earth cable to the front - earth the battery as close to the battery as possible (less than 0.5M is ideal) - you then earth each component as close as possible to the chassis also.
