Battery problems

Car failed to start with no dashboard lights or interior lights. It had run perfectly 2 days before. I have changed battery and it seems OK. Having just read previous posts about alternator and contacts at the back of the clock I was wondering if I should be checking these things out.
Also, does anyone have experience of trickle chargers? (are they worth it, what's the best one, where to buy and what to pay)

Steve,
Trickle chargers are definitely worth it if you are an occasional user, i.e .car not used for couple of weeks at a time. With the alarm and the immobiliser there is a drain on the battery which a trickle charger will overcome.
Try Machine Mart or Halfords - around a tenner for piece of mind.

Its happened to me before with the battery. They seem to go downhill very fast if they are left for a while so the charge goes right down. My car was in for service a few weeks ago and it was running no problems. They phoned me up the day before I was due to pick it up and said that the battery was lunched. Fortunatly the battery was under warranty so I took it back and they exchanged it. Its probably due to it deep cycling with the drain off the alarm. My new house has a garage thats got power it it so Its a battery conditioner for me when we move in.

these modern batteries do seem to have a habit of going from performing perfectly well to totally letting you down within the space of a few days. A friend of mine bought a brand new motor and the battery packed-up within a month of purchase, due to a faulty cell.

How old is your battery. Maybe it's simply time it was replaced.
