Battery Problems

Hi

I usually drive my RS at least once a week and have never had any starting problems. However this morning after an unusually long period of standing it refused to fire and the battery seemed weak and died away and the alarm made a pathetic squeeking noise. Now I have three options as I see it

1) Get the local OPC round at huge expense. Its also in for a service in two weeks so I dont really want them changing plugs etc
2) Get the RAC out - Free but would they do any damage?
3) Chuck a set of jump leads at it, but again I'm not sure if I would damage anything.

Any thoughts/advice much appreciated

Morning Timmy!

Jump leads would be fine, I've never had a problem. I use a Fast Start unit that gives it a boost for starting only.

Worth getting a 'Carcoon' or similar trickle charger to keep the battery topped up, if you have mains in garage.

You do garage it, DON'T you? [;)]

Check the battery levels and disconnect if you are charging it off an ordinary charger.

Worth turning off the battery isolater if the car is in a garage to save any drain on the system.

Got the jump leads on her but no difference (just cranking over). Had a waggle of the battery master switch which looks like the wiring to the immobilisers are also attached to and if by magic she started first time.

Took her for a blast and everything is back in full working order.

Morning Timmy!!

Just go over the whole system and tighten everything up. Check all of the earth bonding leads and straps (if you can reach them!), in particular the strap from the gearbox to the body and earth connection to battery. Remove them if necessary, sand with fine emery paper and apply rust remover if necessary. There is some gunk avaialble to smear on electrical connections to avoid build up of corrosion.

Think of the distance the battery feed has to go to the starter motor compared to a front engined car and the loss in amps over that distance if the battery and connections aren't A1.

my battery packed up last week but it has been in the car for about 5 years. I do have a trickle charger but I find that the RS does not drain much power compared to the C2 I had before. There was a 72 amp hour battery in the car but according to the manual only a 36 amp hour is required. A call to my specialist and he thought I should replace it with the more powerful battery. I now have a 60 amp hour £50.00 from euro parts. It is quite heavy. Is anyone using the 36 amp hour battery?

Hi

Just had mine serviced at 9m and they fitted a 66A Bosch for about £60.00. The non-original 60A Varta was fitted about 3 years ago and wasnt vented properly either. Minimal interim mileage probably doesnt help.

More importantly had the geometry re-done and I swear it is a different car! Who would have thought minutes of a degree makes such a difference?
 
When the battery in my RS failed I replaced it with the smallest that I could find (30 a I think) as the whole point of the RS is weight reduction. It also cost less! I use a trickle charger when the car is not in use. Has worked fine for 2 years now.

Think a lot of RS's have the common fault with the interior heater fan thingy too which just runs at random unless corrected.....
