I may need a new one! I went to the garage this morning the doors opened ok, the lights and radio came on but just clicking and both side windows going up and down!!

If it is the battery anyone changed recently if so what cost and type.

Cheers Chris.

Bosch Silver Series S5 - currently £52.94 inc VAT at Costco (i paid £25 on offer a few months ago)

Alternatives - Varta Blue, about £100 from tyre depots, or Halfords do their own brand with 4yr warranty for £100.

Fast reply lads, cheers.

Thanks for the info ref turning on ignition to stop the alarm going off! I may have left something on in the car so i was going to try and trickle charge first. Do i leave the ignition on say overnight while the i charge, i know it sounds like a silly question!

Again thanks for the reply pus the heads up on the offer at Cosco.

Chris

No - you only have to switch the ignition on if you disconnect the battery to stop the alarm going off. Leave the battery connected while you trickle charge.

Also, if you disconnect the battery, make sure you have the radio code.

wow i forgot to turn the ignition on!! what a noise!! i've put it on trickle with it disconnected, thanks for reply Richard.

Ok it's gone flat again! The reading on the dash clock is 14 when i got the car running, does this indicate it's charging ok?

Cheers.

I rang Cosco but they need a part number, any ideas which S5 it is.

Like it says in the DIY - S5 010. This is the 85Ah version. I have the 75Ah on mine (S5 007) but that's only because I had it 'in stock' when the original died on me.

With the engine running a multimeter across the battery terminals should read around 13.4-13.8V - its the alternator working flat out to recharge the battery. Switch the engine off and you will probably see 11V across the terminals and this will fall slowly even without any consumers on (ie lights, radio etc). You have the luxury of a voltmeter in the dashboard, the Boxster doesn't :(

I'd advise you to change the battery fairly quickly - running the alternator flat out for hundreds of miles will do it no favours at all.

Fitting a non Porsche battery may/will invalidate the new warranty scheme if this applies to you - Porsche want about £160 for the battery for DIY fit, about £280 fitted. Its a heavy item to lift out on your own - i changed mine using a bar through the handles and a person either side to lift the bar.

I'm on the old warranty scheme do you know if that's ok.

Costco MK seem to have sent all the S5 010 batteries back for reasons unkown. Had a right pain in the arse with this problem a few week ends ago. Ended up with the Halfords battery. Those saying it's a bugger getting the old battery out are right. I almost gave myself a hernia! Will remember the bar trick for next time.
You will also need an extension bar on your socket to reach the bolt for the battery clamp.

I changed my battery last week and agree its very heavy. BUT, i put a rug in the boot, put 2 short planks in it, stood on them and the job was immesurably easier.
