Battery Removal

All apologies if this is somewhere already but couldn't find in the search. I am next to useless mechanically (can barely wire a plug) but for some stupid reason thought I could replace my dead battery - I have bought a new battery and removed the connectors at the top of the old one but is held at the bottom - I didn't want to force anything is there another bolt I need to remove - If so, any help in pointing in correct direction is much appreciated.

No daft questions here. There is a plate that is securing the bottom of the battery to the tray it sits on. Allen head bolt so you will need a socket set with an extension. There should also be a vent tube disappearing into the bumper area. This is to vent the hydrogen gas that is produced when charging to atmosphere.

There's usually a clamp plate on the bottom of the battery. 13mm bolt I think, socket on an extension to remove it.

Assuming your battery is in the left boot pannier there's an Allen bolt towards the front holding the retaining bracket down. Iirc t30 size, you'll need a socket & extension to reach it.

I think the only way to know for certain what bolt is in there is to use a torch :) the original one may have long since disappeared..

be warned though - once you've swapped a battery it's a slippery slope... you'll be doing a clutch change by this time next year [:D]

Yup. My 1990 S2 has an allen bolt and my 1989 2.7 has a 13mm "conventional" bolt.

Many thanks - for all your replies - Will have another look today and hopefully get it going. I stupidly have let it sit for a few months as been away and bought other vehicles - and hadn't remembered that 944s tend to be solid (or at least go wrong at predictable times/mileage) until you let them sit. My throttle cable has also got stuck. All my own fault! Again, many thanks for all help

Robin

Alarm/immobilizers can drain 944 batteries very quickly if left. I suggest disconnecting the terminal that goes to earth (-) or connect a maintaining battery charger.
