Battery shorting out.

Was wondering if anyone else has ever had this problem......?

I've been using the car less than usual recently and it has sat for a week at a time in between each outing. The last two times when I have tried to start it there has been absolutely nothing in the battery. Not even enough to operate the central locking. After jump starting from the Volvo it runs fine and holds a charge for a short time afterwards. I had thought that I'd done something foolish when I recently installed the bass tube and new speakers..... but.... I think I found the problem yesterday.

The rear boot carpet with the foam pads covering the boot side pods - one containing the battery... has become rather wet due to the rear hatch seal failing. When I removed it yesterday I noticed that the underside of the pad over the battery was not only quite moist, but had two burn marks on it exactly where the battery terminals sit []. I'm assuming for now that this has been the cause of the problem and am going to see how things go with the carpet removed - seals to be replaced in due course.

I'd be interested in any opinions. Was there ever a cover for the battery in these cars?

There should always be a positive terminal cover in all cars - it's generally to stop metalwork shorting across the terminals and starting a fire after a crash. Usually it doesn't come with the battery but I imagine you can buy them - there are usually 2 holes near the positive terminal for "legs" on the cover to insert into to hold it on.

Thanks Fen. I'll have to get one. I can only think that I've been quite lucky really as things could have been worse. I guess the precipitatig precipitation[:D] prevented any real fire hazard though.

Could be worth someone drop testing this also? Another point, have you got an amp on the base tube if so is the remote wire linked up to the correct source this could be causing the amp to stay on if not which will kill the battery

? Drop testing - not sure I know what you mean.
Thanks for the suggestion, the bass tube does have an amp built in but the whole thing never stays in the car overnight. I just connect it up and velcro it to the boot carpet when I want to use it.

Drive to an auto store and they have a drop test they normaly use, its a fork with a gauge in the middle that tells the strength of the battery, only takes few seconds and least it rules out the battery being no good.

I had a similar problem and was convinced that I had a drain however when checking I found I had a dodgy cell on the battery and have had no troublesince replacing it.
