Battery thing done to death

But this may help !

I fitted a Bosche Silver battery to my 993RS two years ago.

The Tracker and alarm really take the battery down quite quickly, so I use my C-Tek Optimizer once every fortnight in Summer (for a couple of days), and often leave it on all the time in Winter.

I drove the car recently at Cadwell Park and have driven it two or three 25 mile journeys since, and had the battery on charge.

Imagine my surprise when, after taking the car off charge today, it would not start --- full array of diagnostic lights, pneumatic servo assist pump fired up, but clicking from the starter. So, I took a charged spare battery and hefty jump leads, still wouldn't start ---. Tried a second battery, marginally better but STILL no go.

So, I telephoned Charlie at Strasse who told me to try removing the old battery from circuit, and use only the spare battery --- RESULT [:)][:)]

It seems the old (two year old) battery has a power sapping cell that is even taking the charged battery down ...

Well I never !! [;)]

Chris useful post, the Bosch batteries are not what they used to be.Get a battery with a 4 or 5 year warranty.I stopped buying the bosch batteries some time ago.

IIRC I think Bosch Silvers are guaranteed for 4 or 5 years - most makes of car battery are covered for 3 yrs minimum.

Did you keep the receipt Chris? [;)]

I had this recently and replaced with another Bosch. The fun was actually finding a correct 74ah battery as specified rather than the 72 I had fitted and the 66ah I have seen on a few other 993's. Eurocarparts came up with the correct part and the most competitive price.

I appreciate battery condition is important, obviously a dead battery will not work, but the correct and higher rated ah can help to give it the muscle on cranking.

Thanks for the feedback, the battery that's now in is the old Bosch from my 964, which I replaced to create a spare earlier in the year.

Paul, I have a Europarts close to my work in Leeds so I'll obtain this.

To be fair, I know that the battery has gone completely flat on two or three occasions, it's always a question of sharing the charger.

But I've never before had a battery fail so completely. In fact, the old battery is currently powering an electric fence !

Strangely, my 964 with Cobra etc is fantastic at preserving the battery --- but it has a very recent device.

Both the 993 and GT3 MkI seem to demand more of the battery.

Chris, there can be quite a bit of confusion at ECP as they list more than one alternative for 993 fitment.

After going through the list with the chap in the store we came to the conclusion that a Bosch S4 096 74ah03b was the correct part.

The ECP part number on the invoice appears to be 444770967.

Just thought it may potentially save you some time.

Just had same issue with my rs but had had on conditioner all time!

I just don't find batteries last like they used to

Replaced with the dearest longest warranties item general traffic had as was told Bosch are pants these days

Is it part of getting older but I do think most modern stuff is not as long lasting ?

Thanks Paul and noted Richard, I'll give the Bosch one last chance ... !

My Europarts in Leeds has just moved so am still using the old battery, but will definitely buy the 444770967 ....
